Well this is Eowyns leg today :) I am pleased with the wound in general its starting to shrink, and all the spaces have filled in.

It has however not got a bit of a pronounced bump which i am HOPING will go down due to where it is....

Does it look like it will settle down???

Be honest please what would you be thinking at this point ??? :)

I don't know the background on this so can't offer much opinion on how well it's healing with regard age/reason for injury but I would probably speak with my vet in the morning (they don't usually charge for advice over the phone) about the possibility of proud flesh developing and what can be done to prevent/deal with it.

I'd be pleased that the rest of the leg is not swollen - it is localised to the wound

Bsaically for backround info :)

Mare out her leg through a drain cover (long story) did this just over three weeks ago

It was stitched then bandages put on. Mare takes a reaction to bandages/boots being on long and the hair/skin falls of the limbs (been there before with a previous injury) and I end up with secondary infections (again same as before)

And the above was it today :)

I think alot of the swelling will go down once the edges have met and started to form a scab.

Mucca honey is the best thing to use, my boy sliced his shoulder open ( long story) and the hole wasn't able to be stitched, lots of honey worked wonders.

Here's a tip though once the edges of the cut have started to knit together, lessen the use of the honey o every other day a few times then stop, once a good strong scab has formed. Why? Because the honey encourages cell growth, and you don't want any proud fresh.

Know once the scab has dried and started to flake, start using duck fat on it. This will aid hair growth and make the new skin flexible so less scar tissue forms

Here's a pic of my boy

That's 4 weeks on, and no scar formed just a slightly different line of hair growth

i think its looking great in such a short space of time. you are obv doing the right thing. such a large initial wound will take a long time to settle and reduce. i think you will just have to be patient! it will leave a scar but should reduce a lot in the next 6 months. Well done to you and your vet.

I'd think thats healing very well. Despite your reluctance to keep it covered, that really is the best thing to stop the proud flesh forming.

Use manuka honey, or, if there is proud flesh forming steroid cream with a padded dressing (like allevyn) and apressure bandage will sort it in no time.

Thank you guys much appreciated.

I dnt know if you can see in the first pic but some of the hair is hanging at the back and just above the wound, thats stuff that has started to fall out, its only little tufts (thank god her leg was bald at the back and front last time) I am tempted to slap camrosa or my old faithful cornucrescine on it to get it to grow back or does anyone have any other miracle hair growth formulas :)

Looks like it is healing really well, I had a colt with a much worse injury than this years ago - he cut right down to the bone the full length of his rear cannon, you could literally wrap your hand round the bone amazingly it missed everything!! Took ages to heal as it couldn't be stitched, but we kept it bandaged and dressed with that gel stuff that has collogen in it - can't think what it's called but it was great - not cheap though!! We did that until there was just a small zigzag scab, now you can only just see the scar and there is only a very slightly raised bit of skin - you have to look hard though, the tiny bit of proud flesh disappeared over a few months. I wouldn't waste your money on camrosa - all it does is provide a moist clean environment that skin needs to heal which anyone of the skin ointments/honey does the exact same thing at a fraction of the cost!!! The hair will grow back at the same speed no matter what you plaster on it!!!:D
