Posted quite a while ago regarding having real problems picking up a youngsters feet, i.e horse is only 3 and would just hop and lean back constantly when trying to pick out feet, very very difficult and disheartening! Posted on here and go lots of advice and tips from people who had had the same problem, and low and behold, it's really working! Have been practising twice or more times per day, and horse is now fab, especially in such a short amount of time!

I went with the "dont let go" approach, and kept hold until I sensed him relax, even just for a split second, at which point i let go and heaped praise on him, lots of rubs and pats and telling him he's a good lad. As long as i let go on my terms, even if it was only after a few seconds, it seemed to really have impact, im so so happy!

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

Good news!

We also discovered that Ari stopped pulling back if you allowed his leg (knee) to stay foward of his chest, ie you didn't pull it back under him at all when lifting it. I think he thought he was going to fall on his face because his leg felt too far back, so he used to hop and pull back to get his leg forward again.
