I have a miniature Shetland 9 month old, she is fine in herself, eating fine, drinking etc...

But she has had "cow pat like poop" for a while have tried probiotic by naff but didn't do anything. Have been recommend to use pepto bismol?

Food wise she is on sure grow & chaff - grass in the day and hay at night.

could anyone help with this at all?

A friend of mine said the vet recommended the pepto bismol to her when her little one had runny poop. Just unsure on it really. Have had a dung tested with the vets and all came back clear!

Picture of her at around 8 months

whats in the sure grow? Maybe increase the fibre and cut out all cereals, something like fast fibre by allen and page.

What about trying a balancer? something that contains yea sac (sp) to try and settle his tummy. Have you got any fresh shoots of grass coming through?

My TB is the same, or was in the summer, is much more 'normal' at the moment which I suspect is down to him having ab lib hay at night. Had vet out over the summer who wasn't concerned because he looked well and was a good weight. They did give me a probiotic to try (which wasn't cheap), but it didn't help in the slightest and they tested a poop sample. I'd chat with your vet, although its not nice to clean up doesn't seem to do my boy any harm. Hoping, as this will be his second summer with us on 24/7 turnout he may get more used to the grass but I suspect he will always be a smelly cow pat producing chap!

I find my mini Shetland's guts very resistant to cow pat poos. However in my bigger horses it is usually a sign of gut disruption from excess sugars in grass and or hay. Soaking hay and taking off grass is one thing to try plus yea sacc but with her still a baby I would ring the vet too.

Check she isn't being fed treats by some one as well.

My mils old Shetland mare is on chat, senior mix and brewers yeast and also a pinch of black salt (think its called that - it stinks of eggs). She's been better since on that! :-)

Amandap - I am the same, mine get beat and balancer! Simple! However MIL tends to feed the old fashioned way (at least 3 different feeds in huge quantities!)

They did cut the chaff out and she was no better mind! But its age with her, op - I'd try cutting the chaff or switching for something without molasses!

Try some Manuka honey in her feeds.
Worked wonders on friends oldie- used 2 b a case of if yr lifted his day stand clear it b splattered!! The honey made huge diff & gave him normal poo & now just gets it every now & then if he's v gassy (1st sign he was goin 2 start spraying!!)

Yea sacc worked a treat on my mare....but also fresh green grass and worms can also cause this condition....

This is interesting, one of my 10 month old minis has also started doing sloppy poo's in the last couple of days. I am going to keep an eye on it and see it if continues, I was wondering if it is just down to the new grass coming through?

Have just been out with the ponies, bella who was doing the sloppy poos is still doing them and has now got a very messy backside. Other pony, Lulu, is very keen on scratching her ass against a tree stump so am taking a poo sample in to the vets to get an egg count done. However I also noticed on Saturday that they both have lice so the bum scratching could be related to that rather than worms. Need to check whether pinworms will show up on an egg count actually!

Ah nope they don't show up according to intelligent worming website, will have to take in a Sellotape sample...*goes off to find sellotape*

Ew ew ew just gone to do the Sellotape thing, came back in and noticed my black jeans were crawling with lice! Cue frantic sticky rollering to get them off and change of clothes, still feeling very itchy!! Yuk!

The bum scratching could well be lice, but that wouldn't cause sloppy poos!! That is something internal.....

No, one pony is doing sloppy poos and the other is doing bum scratching! They both definitely had lice but I treated then with coopers yesterday. When I saw pony 2 doing bum scratching, I wondered if they perhaps had pinworm which might account for pony 1 doing sloppy poos, perhaps it is just the lice giving her an itch but I thought it would be best to check for worms anyway. Waiting to hear back from the vets today.

I hope they don't have worms as if they do this will be the 4th time since September that they have been wormed :/ not sure what else I can do to prevent them as I poo pick everyday! Hopefully it's just a baby thing :)
