Since my friend's duck died both the dogs and I have been missing her so I have bought myself 3 silkie hens. They arrived Thursday and from being terrified of everything they are settling in well and becoming distinct personalities. They are slightly different sizes so to start with I just called them min, midi and maxi but now they are Minnie, Mathilda and Maxine. Mathilda is the bossy one and first out in the morning. Maxine is currently the prettiest and Minnie is cute and the darkest one. They had only just arrived when these were taken.

They are gorgeous! Welcome Minnie, Mathilda and Maxine ? I’m looking forward to lots more photos of you!
I used to keep hens, just Warrens and Blackrocks who were joined later by a few of the more rare breeds. All had names, the bossy one was Boss Hen ?

ahh lovely, we loved our hens, we used to rehome ex batts and I volunteered for a time at the BHWT.
We had a total of eight, they were lovely and all had the personalities. When my partner first made me scrambled eggs on toast with their free range eggs I couldn't believe the colour of the yolks! So different to the rubbish we'd had from the supermarket.

Have a 'cracking' time with them Erin :)

Probably telling you something you already know but our ex batts were kept on part of the XC course where my partner lived and worked at the riding club. We had a wood next door so used to get frequent badgers and foxes in the vicinity, but never lost a single hen to them as we used to lay out poles and planks about 2-3ft away from the outside perimeter of the run and coop so that foxes and badgers were deterred from digging, as they can't dig between the gap (plank and run) as its too close together and its too far for them to dig on the outside of the plank if that makes sense. It certainly makes sense. In fact we only had one casualty the whole four years and that was my beloved hen Scramble when a dog walkers staffy climbed over the wired five bar gate and bit her and broke her leg. :(
