Hi Ive just managed to buy a mare that looks like shes just had a foal but lost it.Not being very horsey until 6 months ago I didnt check underneath at her teets. They still look swollen and she still looks loose but my heart went out to her as she is only just three and is very underweight and poor looking for her Ardennes breeding. She has been backed but seems very unsure when being mounted. She settled in to her new big stable within the first five minutes but then everyone was giving me different advice what to do with her.I have been advised to put her out to grass for a couple of months so she will put on weight but this would make it hard to start bonding with her .Does anyone have a plan of action for her?Is there anything I can do for her swollen teets?I just want to cuddle her as she looks so laid back with her short but hard life up till now.

no and dont ask why we let our heart and not our head rule as we wanted to get her out of there a.s.a.p. I had my other horse vetted. This time we forgot common sense

I understand...I think everyone is in that situation at some point. I would say first things first get the vet out to give her a good once over and to check she is sound and well. The vet should be able to advise you as to whether she has been in foal. I think it's difficult to really suggest a course of action until you are more fully informed on her health.

You can still turn her out and bond with her, a quiet groom once a day will work wonders, if she has just lost a foal, and especially with her age and breeding she will have a lot of growing up to do. In a years time I bet you will have a different horse. Getting a vet in is good advice, it will give you peace of mind once she has a clean bill of health.
