Daisy my new Lurcher broke her leg on the 14th January,
I was out for a walk and heard her making an awful noise at the top of a hill, sounded like something was attacking her. She was obviously in great pain.
By the time I had managed to run up the hill through bushes, mud and in wellies in the near dark it had gone silent.
I was calling her but nothing, I thought if something had attacked her she may have run off.
But then I looked over to the top of hill and saw a white thing lying on the ground motionless.
My heart sank as I thought she was dead which was such a horrible feeling after losing Jemma(lurcher with cancer) last year I really couldn't cope with losing another one. I ran over to her and she was laying face down in the mud.
I lifted her up and saw her leg dangling down and very swollen at the femur.
I checked her over for any blood loss, none thankfully as I knew I was about half mile away from the car and she would have bled to death before I could get her back if she was bleeding badly. The pulse was evident in her leg and leg was warm so no impediment on blood flow which is good or she could have lost her leg. I started carrying her back to the car up hills etc and I had to keep putting her down every hundred yards or so, although she is only about 33 pounds in weight carrying a dead weight up a hill is tiring!
I eventually got her back to the car and settled her down, I had already phoned my mum and asked he to ring the vet to say I was coming down.
They said can you wait until after 6 pm , NO, I can't bloody wait the poor dog was in agony.
Until it was looked at by the vet I wasn't sure if she had dislocated it,broken it or torn the muscles.
I ended up getting her some morphine and anti inflammatory drugs at my own vets then I had to take her upto the Vets Now clinic which are www.vets-now.com (out of hours emergency vets) she was x rayed later that night under general anaesthetic.
It's a simple break thankfully and she was referred to the fitzpatrick referrals near Guildford on sunday and had a op on the monday .
She's now is in a pen in the front room and trying to keep a young lively lurcher as still and inactive as you can is harder than winning the lottery. It's like trying to get hold of a wet bar of soap that's been plugged into the mains and is also on speed!

She hasn't had a good start in life, abandoned by travellers and left to her own devices with no food etc on a camp, full of round worms, open bleeding sores all over her,no hair hardly on her body, mites making her scratch herself raw, dirty, thin and scared of men so we have to assume she's been roughed up a bit. Then in dirty smelly kennels until we picked her up. We have turned her round in the short time we have had her (got her in August last year) she's put on weight, got all her hair back, is nice and clean and shiny, has raw meat and bones natural diet, no worms or fleas and has learned to trust us. Then 4 weeks ago she was attacked by friend's dog in Wales so has bite marks (deep punture wounds to left back leg), she was chased by German Sheperd out of control 2 weeks ago over the woods here where we live as well and now the poor thing has a busted leg!
She's such a dear little dog and doesn't deserve any of it but there's hundreds more like her out there aren't there?
Why people insist on buying a puppy when there are thousands of rescues waiting for a loving home I will never know!
I have added the before and after x rays.

Last picture is her showing the leg she broke before she broke it!

Ouch, poor Daisy, she's certainly done a good job of that hasn't she, I was expecting to just see a crack.
I hope she has got all her bad luck out of the way now and heals quickly, without driving you too mad whilst she is on "box rest".

Poor Daisy and poor you what a hard time you're having:( She's obviously had a really miserable life until meeting you:) I must say the break looks horrible, I had a Dalmatian with a similar break in his front leg at 7 months old, so I know the difficulties you face, however Daisy is very lucky to have found such a loving and caring home, so even if she is uncomfortable at the moment at least she is surrounded by love and care. I agree about rescue dogs as opposed to puppies, mine have all been rescues. Daisy looks absolutely gorgeous, lucky you (both) :):) Hope she recovers soon.

Please give Daisy a HUGE cuddle from me (but mind her leg!). There's no mistaking the break is there. I had tears in my eyes reading her story, but bet you have a job getting on the sofa!

Agree with you about rescues.

ouch ouch..poor little mite, that must of hurt
glad you got her fixed and hopefully the recovering wont take as long

glad she found a loving owner who care and will love her for the rest of her days

it makes me mad with owners who cant keep control of their dogs..i had a gsd ran up to mine the other day, frighten the living daylights out of me,if i hadnt got my two on the lead something would of happened as it wasnt that friendly

yes their are alot of rescues out there but most cases you dont know the breeding hence having breed/health problem or not fed correctly as pups and not as strong as they should be once into adulthood

ive aways got my pups from good breeders and can go into the lines back to the 1920/30s..so in my case i would always either know the breeding of the dog or buy in one

Wow, that is a break!:( Looks a lovely girl and sounds like she's found a wonderful home with you. Good luck to you both in having a straightforward recovery.:)

Ouch! Poor Daisy - she looks a sweetheart. Glad she's got a nice environment now to recover in.

Don't envy you having to keep her still for a while though :D

That is one lovely clean break right there :D bless her little socks, and how lucky is she to land with you, I can see you adore her, lovely metal work too, very nice repair.
