Here's my story.
I have been with my OH for 12 years, living together for 11.
When we met, I was a keen rider -didn't own, just schooled horses for a local riding school and escorted a few hacks and had lessons.
My OH was a keen skier.
We agreed that he would learn to ride if I learned to ski. So he had about 10 lessons (falling off in about 5 of those) and I skied for about 6 years before deciding that I couldn't stand the fear or pain anymore.
8 years ago I bought a TB ex-racer. Although my OH didn't ride him he always asked about him as he knew that it was my passion. In April this year, I bought a "project" ex-racer aged 8, with the intention of giving my 20 year old (horse, not OH) the summer off. She was bought out of a field from the trainers yard. The intention was to sell her on in September, but due to having problems with a tooth abscess and sinusitis, she is in hospital and won't be home any time soon, so I am moving them both to a DIY yard with the intention of getting her well and either selling her or keeping her (haven't mentioned the keeping her issue yet to OH).
OH has developed an obsession with the new mare. He is besotted with her, in a way I have never seen him with another horse. So a couple of weeks ago, when he knew that I definitely had to move to DIY in order to be able to keep them both over winter, I jokingly asked him to come and ride my old boy. He astounded me by telling me that he would. So I ran/collapsed alongside him while he rode through the park in walk and trot, and was very soft with his hands as I asked him, and got his rising trot quite well. Five days later, he was up there again and this time cantered him three times in the park - it wasn't pretty, but he enjoyed it and horse was great. He is now talking about getting jods/breeches and boots which fit properly and a new hat (he thinks his old one is "past it" now).
So I am over the moon that he is finally taking an interest and just wanted to share it with you all. He is keen to go out again next week. Is it too soon to buy him some riding stuff, or do you think he will keep going?
Thanks for reading, I am just so happy he is finally getting involved!
I won't offer hot choccies to anyone reading this as I believe that is Mrs M's domain, however I could tempt you with red wine (been to Asda tonight - got 3 for £12) or left over pizza?
