George!!! Just a fantastic dog! You could do anything with him. Totally special. He was a failed guard dog and one night, when left to guard a yard he decided to move in with us instead! Played constantly until the day before he died. I would love to find another one like him but he was one in a million really. Even the vets said the same. And he just adored children as they didnt get bored of playing!!!

I expect he is still playing at Rainbow Bridge.

Been trawling through old photos today and found them. Brought back such happy memories. GSDs are such wonderful dogs.

Get another one, there are lots of GSDs looking for lovely caring homes. I got a failed prison dog after I lost my old one and he is an absolute sweetie.

You are right, they are fantastic dogs. I was on GSD rescue a couple of weeks ago and there are loads of them that need a great home..... Hope you find a new friend soon

Oh he died quite a while ago. I have 2 mastiffs. George was our family dog. He was the first GSD we had. Mum and dad have rescued Shepherds ever since we lost George. They are on their fifth one now! The first three they didnt have for long as two were very elderly and one was a young dog with a big heart problem.

I would have another shepherd tomorrow but just dont have the time to exercise one. Mastiffs dont like to much exercise!

Look at Georges ears. Bless him.

I love GSD's I have a 5 year old bitch.Apologies picture quality not great. Sh is a star and thinks the whole world revolves around her. We took her to a county show today and she behaves as though its all for her.

Oh she is very like George, in colouring and build. He just lived to play! He had toys everywhere. The Red setter just got so jealous as she liked to be the centre of attention and she would steal his toys and put them in the water trough!

George on my wedding day! Please note in the second picture he has half a tennis ball in his mouth! He always got so embarassed having his piccy taken! Apologies to my bridesmaids for spoiling their good looks!

He has really kind eyes and looks so huggable. Dexter in my siggy is my first shepherd and I can say that I am totally addicted. Ive had collies in the past.

Ooh Dozzie I love the fact you had him at your wedding. He looks like he was a star. You know when you get a good GSD they are the best ever. Do you have any more piccys of him.

He was just the kindest dog ever! he used to get Christmas cards and presents, sent to him from the local kids!!!When we first had him , if there was no-one to play with he'd bunk off, over the six foot fence, up the road to see the children playing football! we would get a phonecall " We've got George and he's got our ball!!!"

He was also brilliant for children who were afraid of dogs as with George they had no choice but to play!!!!

We were so lucky to find him, well he found us really. he followed me home one night on my paper round. We found out who owned him but they didnt want him back as he was supposed to be a guard dog but was totally useless! he didnt like being alone at night guarding a yard so would jump the fence and bunk off!! So we were given him! They had been looking for a home for him and when they saw how happy he was they said we could keep him! I so remember that day!

Gorgeous pics of your GSDs, I have never been without one throughout my life (my mother bred them ) and hope I am always able to have one. Was going to ask you about Georges breeding but your last post tells me you probably never had his papers? He reminds me so much of the type of dog produced by my mums bloodlines (well her dogs, you know what I mean

).

Thanks! George belonged to the local brickyard owners who were of Gypsy origin and we were told his papers got burnt in a fire! Yeah right!!! We suspect he was either stolen or unpaid for! He would have been born about 1978. Not sure what the breeding was like then!

He wasnt the show type more of a working type. He didnt have the really sloping back and his legs were set well underneath him. He was a big strong and sound dog who was very easy to train. I will try to find some more photos but mum has most of them.

Does your mum still breed? I would love to have another George! My Mastiff bitch is 8 1/2 now so old for a mastiff and my dog will be devastated when she goes. I know i need to think about a pup in the next year or so. Just dont want 3 mastiffs!!!!

Plus i think Hooch will be too elderly to cope with a mastiff puppy bouncing about!

Have you got any photos of your mums dogs?

Sadly no my Mum is now 87 and in a care home, she suffers from dementia and is not very well at all. She still had a GSD when she had to go into the home, and I still have that living with me, she is 13 and a half! I took over Mums affix but haven't bred a litter myself for over 7 years, though hopefully will be getting a new pup in the not too distant future. The photos are a sore point, I have being promising Cala I would post pics for ages, am really going to make an effort now, have both children at home so will enlist their help.

and your girl is sooo pretty.

I love reading about all these good things about sheps. It wasnt till I got my boy that I found out what sort of reputation the breed had. When he got to 6 months old people would cross the road so they didnt have to walk past him

If only they stopped and said hello they would have had the joy of experiencing a big Dexter hug and sloppy kiss

The reputation of GSDs is so wrong. However i do think that they are easily screwed up as they are such faithful dogs. They just want to please and need consistency and love. They all have similar mannerisms and a need to protect but also need to be praised and feel rewarded . They are actually very needy dogs! They are real "people" dogs.

When we had to have George PTS it was so sudden. The day before he had been playing relentlessly as per his whole life!!! Then in the morning he was being sick. He thought he was being naughty bless him. This was a dog who was never naughty. Mum took him to the vet who gave him 24hrs to live. Rather than put him through the anxiety of being sick mum had him PTS. He was a dog in a million. Turned my mum from Labs to GSDs!!! (The setter we had was a rehoming job, favour for a friend, and we have never had another!!LoL!!! She was a character and very pretty but damned hard work!!!

I was actually thinking of GG. Have been sorting out Mums things (had to sell her house to pay for care

) and found some old pics of him, only black and white though. Thanks for your thoughts about Mum, it is so sad to see her like this. I may shock some by saying this but if she was an animal her suffering would have ended by now

No, I'm with you on that.
Don't think I have anything adequate to say apart from proferring virtual hugs - you know yourself how hard it is.
Please keep me posted on your future plans...I myself am determined that after 27 years, we will have a 'C' litter!
