My lovely dog Lass had to have an eye removed last week - there was a growth within the eyeball and after taking her to an eye specialist they decided the best thing was to remove the eye as the sight had already gone in it.

I took the gang to the beach yesterday and it was hard to believe it was barely 10 days since the op. The wound has completely healed and the bruising and swelling gone. Once the hair grows back she will be looking fine.

Only thing now is to bring her back during the week - my vet sent the eye away for testing so hopefully there was nothing malignant. Anyway she said that there was no trace of a lump of discolouration in the socket after they had removed the eye.

So anyway, I'm thinking of getting her a patch and calling her Pirate Jenny. I'm just so glad its over and she is her loony self again. She's 10 years old and still charging around like a pup.

My old GSD had to have her eye removed, she still had her sight before the op but coped brilliantly afterwards and soon adjusted. I would think as your girl had already lost the sight she won't be aware of any difference. Although they look a bit strange at first with one eye you soon really don't notice it, just makes them a bit more unique. Fingers crossed there is nothing malignant left.

My Springer Spaniel had a very bad eye injury, but a specialist veterinary eye surgeon managed to save the eye. She had some sight in it to begin with but this has gradually diminished over the last year and I don't think she sees much out of it any more.

At first glance you wouldn't notice there's a problem as she still has the eye, but there is no iris, and you can see a partly formed cataract if you look closely. Plus there is a graft across part of the eyeball where it was repaired.

Anyway the vet won't take it out unless it causes any problems later on. But my dog has never been the least bit troubled, apart from the time of the injury, and she seems well adjusted to only seeing out of one eye, apart from losing more tennis balls than the average dog!

I do try and keep her out of thorn bushes etc though as it would be a disaster to injure the other eye.

Thanks for the good wishes - I'll let you know tomorrow. We went to the beach again this evening and had another great run. From a distance you wouldn't know anything was wrong.

How wonderful that she's suffered no adverse effects.

My dog lost an eye three months ago. She was a bit down for a few days--it was secondary glaucoma resulting from a severe head trauma, and I think when the sight goes suddenly, they act a bit lost--but she was up to running around two weeks after having her eye out, and has completely bounced back in terms of confidence and fetching skills. It's amazing how resilient they are, isn't it?

(And yes, that's a fake eye.)

My staff had an eye removed due to a tumour too..... best thing for him was having that removed. I think he was already blind in that eye as he seemed to adapt imediatly

Silly thing is that it is the same side as the missing back leg so! I will try and post a photo of him for you.

Oh she is adorable! Fingers crossed for good results on the tests

They are the best! She had hers removed December last year and is doing very well. She still goes out retrieving for us. She was blind in it for a few years with a cataract but then developed glucoma and an ulcer in it so out it came!
