Emae is now eight weeks old, and still as mad as ever! I was determined tonight that I would get some 'moving' pictures of her, but couldn't find my camera anywhere (I think I've left it in the lorry, which is currently going through its MOT!) So I did the best I could with my mobile phone!

Emae is by H-Tobago, out of my own mare, a TBxID called Evy (or Ayemkay Evin Star). Emae won a sporthorse foal class at the Suffolk show last week, but yet another photographer failed to get a picture of her trotting out.

Anyway, here are the (very blurry) pictures that I managed to snap this evening. Just to put the speed into perspective, I also took some pictures of my dressage horse cantering this evening, and they didn't come out blurry at all!!

Wow! Even all blurry she looks amazing! And reminds me so much of her speed-demon Daddy! (He gives everyone heart-attacks trying to break the land-speed record in the sand-school!)

And look at that powerful 'engine' on her, and the lovely quality head and neck... I can see why she won the sport-horse foal class! And I can see why the judge guessed straight away that she was half-Arab!

Hard to tell from photos but she looks quite tall - what height do you think she will make?

Thanks so much Zoe - I've been longing to see some action pics of Emae! And I am so lucky that you were brave enough to use a pure-bred Arab on your champion sport-horse mare!

Oh my! She is beautiful - even when blurry!

I love the third photo - just so fast looking.

Emae is very obviously a Tobagoling though, it'll be interesting to see them all as yearlings and see how they've changed.

*Three wanders off musing on a Tobagoling for herself*

Tell me about it!! She goes flat out, and I keep thinking "please stop in time for the fence". The trouble is our school is 65m long so she has a good distance to get some speed up, then slams her brakes on (straight legged jar) and I just keep thinking she is going to either go through the fence or break her legs. Short of not letting her out, or tying her legs together, there is little I can do!

She is going to be big I would say - vet can't believe how huge she is getting! She is on a bit of creep now, and also steals her mums food from her bowl. Although mum also steals her creep (despite having tiny foal sized creep bars!) The vet thinks she will make at least 16hh, probably a bit more, which is huge as dad is (please correct me if I'm wrong Kate) 15.1hh and Evy is (when measured for LHC) 15.2hh

I have got a couple more pics of her stood with mum so you can compare size - these were taken last week.

Pampered girlies all rugged up.

Lovely photos. I have decided to breed from my IDX tb mare next year and a friend suggested an arab cross, I said no way...but she is beautiful!

Why do you say 'no way' clodagh? What type of foal do you want, eventing/dressage/jumper etc...?

My aim is to breed Sport Horses, and for me an Arab stallion seemed like a sensible choice. Evy is 3/4TB 1/4ID and is quite a substantial mare, so I wanted something that would add a bit of refinement. As I wanted an eventer, a TB would be the obvious choice, but there are a lot of eventers out there now using PB Arabs. Not only are they renound for their stamina, but they are notrious for being very brave, intelligent individuals.

I am over the moon with the result, and I am sure she will be a top class eventer in years to come. At the moment she is taking the showing world by storm, having already won a major sporthorse foal class at county level.

Having said that, I can understand your reservations Clodagh, and I wouldn't have bred Evy to just any Arab stallion. To me (and remember I am a sporthorse person, not an Arab person) I like a horse to have a leg in each corner, with a nice substantial shoulder and powerful back end. Most Arabs to me seem a little too fine, or a little too upright in the shoulder. Tobago, however, is a rear stunner - he is a solid, four square stallion with movement to die for (seriously breathtaking in the flesh). I'd pretty much made up my mind from pictures, but once I had seen him 'for real' there was no doubt in my mind. As I said before, I wouldn't have just 'made do' with any Arab, and it was Tobago's substance that really sold him to me.

The result is I have a fantastic filly, who is doing very well, and has been spotted by several top producers/judges who have tipped her for great things to come in the showring as a youngster.

At Cliveden the school isn't that big but Tobago gallops flat out the whole time and does scary lightning handbrake turns at the fences! They have tried putting up obstacles to slow him down, but he just turns it into yet another game and does slalom races in and out of the obstacles.

Gosh I thought Evy was quite a bit bigger than 15.2 - she looks bigger! Tobago may be 15.2 by now, but certainly no bigger than that. Would be great if your vet is right and Emae makes 16hh+! Isn't there some measurement formula thing that one can do to estimate adult height? Does anyone here know how to do this?

Gosh - thank you Zoe! I don't think you give yourself enough credit for 'thinking outside the box' - it takes a fair bit of imagination to see an unbacked, first-season show-Arab as a serious sport-horse sire! And he was only a 2yo when you first saw him!

Also, special though Tobago is, he is very, very lucky to have had such a superb mare for his first 'attempt' at sport-horse breeding! I remember when Evy arrived at Cliveden, Tessa (the YO/Stud Manager) was very envious that this mare was visiting Tobago rather than her own advanced eventer stallion by Jumbo, who to be fair would have been a rather more obvious choice!

I'm so grateful that you chose Tobago - and so happy that your confidence is being rewarded!

I had already thought about using an arab on my mare, but my mind was made up by the pictures I have seen of the crop. Aside from cuteness they are all very well put together with superb quality, just what a fairly chunky, but classy mare needs.

WOW! Thank you! You know how much I like your mare FA - she is stunning, and I think would be a super match with my boy!
