I have plaited Hannah up for tomorrow and that bald patch I asked about is just a scrunched up mess

She has one plait, then the mess, then the others are ok... oh well, at least it is not a showing competition!

All the hair has been completely rubbed away, she looks like she has a sweep over

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can stop her rug rubbing like this? Would a Thermatex hood help that could be washed regularly? Or even just one of those fleecy Derby House ones???

I used to use a thermatex hood and it was terrible at pulling the mane out. THe best I've found for protecting the mane, keeping plaits in and also turning out if needed is the snuggy hoods turnout hood. Very strong (not flimsy lycra) and is well lined to stop the mane disappearing!!

Mine is perma-plaited (I just leave the plaits down) I have taken them out at the moment but only to re-pull his mane and tidy it up.
I think whether the hood/neck covers would rub might be down to the individual manes. My Thermatex hood hasn't caused a problem yet

My only problem was that if it was on and he wasn't plaited underneath it then sometimes he would flip some of his mane to the other side which didn't help my cause of trying to train it for showing!

Cut the scraggy bits off!!!

Really, one year i struggled with Finn's and kept trying to plait it, next year i cut it off. Never looked back!

Half a mane to plait and looks much tidier, it's impossible to plait the tufts.

PMSL at Finn!! But i did the exact same with Bloss - definately the better option and it all grows back in the summer!!

Get snipping that mane off Becki!!!!!

However i do have a cure for mane rubbing - make sure you use a neck rug that just attaches with clips, dont attach the clip in the middle, put a loop of bailer twine on the attachments on either side of the rug, then clip the neck rug onto the bailer twine. Just do not attach the middle clip, as thats what causes the mane to rub. So then there is more room for the neck rug to move when the horse moves its neck - i never have problems with Archies mane now, its great!!

Just to add - i dont like hoods incase they come over their eyes.

Yup, same prob with Mister, I too did the snip snip, or rather shaved it!! Alternatively, you can take a piece of his tail, plait that, then plait it to the "tuft"..voila!! hair extension plaits!!

I too do not like hoods, saw one horse once where it had gone over his eye and caused damage to it.......alternatively there are hoods that go over the ears only but not sure about them as never used......I tend not to use hoods on night rugs only turn out
