She had a slight rash on her neck last week but it cleared up after a few days. Her next door stable mate now has similar rash on his neck only but my mare has now developed a hot, itchy rash which starts under the area covered by her numnah and extending down towards her belly.

I have given her a wash with dilute Hibiscrub and am cutting down her hard feed and reducing her haylage and also giving some bran in case it is a feed related problem. The odd thing is that another horse came to the yard today with exactly the same rash in exactly the same area of his body

The two horses have never got close to each other but it seems odd that they both have exactly the same symptoms.

I will keep an eye on my pony tomorrow and wash her again but tonight she is eating well and seems normal in every other respect. Has anyone got any ideas please?

My lad has had something similar, as well as a couple of other horses on the yard. I had the vet out who prescribed anthisthamines but equally said it would clear in 48hrs. They could not say what the reaction was too, just a general allergy but his glands were also up but he was completely OK in himself.

They have since disappeared and reappeared a couple of times over the last week or so and I am putting it down to the grass. Either something growing in it or a bit too much protein/sugar? I have moved him on to soaked hay which seems to have helped a bit but as the vet was not worried I am just keeping an eye on it.

Hope yours goes away soon.

My friends horse has had loads of problems with his rash and has come out in raised small lumps all over his body on numerous occassions. These are not like your typical stinging nettle type reaction. She feeds only soaked hay and ready grass. She has changed her bedding. She has changed his rugs. She has stopped spraying anything near by him. All these things she has stopped doing you need to give 5-6 weeks per thing as thats how long it takes the horses body to stop producing a reaction to the allergen.

Thanks everyone. I've washed the affected area with dilulte Hibiscrub again today and the heat has gone from the rash and pony seems fine in herself. I've put her in a clean cotton-lined rug tonight. I'm going to try riding tomorrow because the rash has now moved further down and won't be affected by the saddle.
