People across the road have a young pointer dog. It got out today and came to the farm and has killed some of my chooks.
Luckily I saw it as it had Mustard in its mouth and it dropped her, shes bald and holey but still alive. Not so lucky were the two black rocks, one dead and the other ripped in half but still alive, I had to knock her on the head.
I caught it and rang the owners, they were very upset. I completely lost it with them...trouble is it had so much fun here its bound to come back, the man said they can't keep it in. They only walk it on the lead as its so wild, why do people have working dogs and not give them enough exercise and training? They have offered compensation I said when I knew how many were missing (they have scattered far and wide) I would let them know. tbh the rocks weren't worth much, they were semi retired and just pottered around the yard together.

So sorry about the chickens. We have chickens and I know how upset I'd be if something like that happened. There is no excuse, absolutely no excuse, for failing to keep a dog secure in its garden. If it jumps the fence they need a higher fence, possibly one with an overhang. If that fails they need a roofed run.

Well the rest have come back, thankfully a lot of the outside the garden lot are good fliers. I found the brahma cockerel and 3 ISAs hiding in the ponies manger.
They are now terrified of my dogs, hopefully that will wear off.
I think £20 a rock, they are that POL so would cost me that to replace them. They can also pay for Mustard's antibiotics, luckily I have some here.
I refuse to make my chooks live in runs so their dog can run wild. Apart from the chooks, who are pets really, we have a small shoot so it will do a lot of good in the pheasant cover.
I will write them a long letter later spelling things out. They were very upset, I give them that, I said it was to me the same as if a pit bull had got in their garden and badly mauled or killed their dog. A lot of people don't see how chickens can be pets but mine all have names and eat from my hand.
Poor chickens, got to go and make sure Boris has made it back to his bedroom, hes not the brightest even when not stressed.

Have they not heard of fences? we have chickens and a dog and cannot afford to fence our 200ft garden (it does have hedges) so when the dog is outside he is on a lunge rein - we have a few placed around the garden tied to posts (he gets two long walks a day so we only have him out in the garden for a quick wee or when we are out there but the lunge reins means he stays in the garden)

Sorry about your girls

Phone the Council and speak to the Dog Warden. Tell the DW what has happened and that they don't think they can keep the dog in so could do with some advice.

In future everytime you see the dog loose phone the Dog Warden.

Sorry for your hens - ours were attecked by a Westie and Lhasa Apso, of all things! Even they had fatal results.

So sorry for your hens. They are part of the family and all have their own characters.

I hope the others recover from their trauma.

Ive had the same problem with 1 springer killing chickens and ducks on 3 occasions luckily I was there and caught it the last time .Although the owners were quite freindly I called the police as any livestock worrying is an offence .The pcso s were very good and told owners that if the dog was seen off the lead again they would be prosecuted and the dog put down .I have not had any problems with them since .

I did, Victoria, but the trouble is I wish I hadn't as if it gets out again and gets run over or something they will be bound to think we shot it.
(Although he said' Godd idea' when I told him that, but I think he was agreeing with everything I said as the best way to diffuse the situation).
We will let it rest this time, as they were genuinly sorry, but it will be police and all next time.

They shouldnt be allowed to have a dog if they don't keep in secured and ensure it is excercised properly. I had a border collie for years, she was bloody hard work to keep excercied but we made sure she was walked/ran till she was knackered 3 times a day and although i loved her to pieces after she passed away i said i would not get another as i couldn't commit to giving the dog the excercise it would need any more, now i have a child as well. Some people are very irresponsible. Hope your lovely chooks get over their ordeal soon

Not if it has tyre tracks on it. I cant believe anyone when approached by someone so clearly upset wouldn't just answer the sensible answer (that I would say myself)

Can I bring my dog round to try and turn him off chickens (muzzled of course) and please do not worry it will NOT be happening again.

Only the purest of idiots can keep their dog contained.
