I hacked Herbie over to a friends yard on Fri to ride out with her and her daughter.
He was a little star hacking over there and we even managed to canter passed some wild ponies
WE arrived and as usual they weren't ready
So Herbs waited patiently for them to tackup and off we set. We were having a lovely ride we had afew trots and popped afew logs. Herbs didn't feel quite right jumping so I stopped after afew. I thought maybe this was due to the hard ground so didn't want to push it. Anyway we carried on and even had a canter which Herbs loved. On the way back to there yard Herbs didn't quite feel right
So I walked him back carefully. I thought maybe he had picked up a stone or something. When we got back I asked to borrow a hoof pick and jumped off. When I got off Herbs just held up his left hind leg and refused to take any weight on it.
I checked his foot but there were no stones So I put him in the stable and gave him some bute. My friend kindly gave me a lift home in her trailer.
I got home and tucked Herbs up in a stable for the night. On a nice bed and bandaged his back legs. The next morning there was little improvment. I gave him another bute and left him in the stable. When I got back from work at lunchtime there was still no improvment despite the bute so I desided to poultice the foot to see what happened. I stopped the bute as it was obviously having no effect and one whole bute should be enough for the little man.
I left the poultice on overnight and come sunday morning he was sound again
and when I took the poltice off there was puss
I'm so relieved it's an abcess. I realy thought it was something serious with how lame he was but them again thats how it goes with foot abcesses. Sound one minuet then suddenly they act like they have a broken leg
Herbs is still happy in himself and tried to kick me several times this morning while I was changing his poultice. The little monkey
Hopefully this is it and he'll soon be all mended and we'll be riding again. My farrior is up on Wed to do one of the other horses on the yard and I'll ring her today to see if she can do Merryn and have a look at Herbies foot and make shore all the puss is coming out.
