My 22 month colt is being gelded tomorrow.

I'm worried can't stand the thought of him being in pain. . .

Poor little boy. . . I feel horrid cause he is such a well behaved colt!!

When mine was done, he hardly knew anything about it....in fact, I had to put a grazing mask on him when he came round, as he was trying to eat straight away!!!! (and was in the field!)

There shouldn't be any pain. He will get local anaesthetic.
I have watched a few being done in the field and they were sedated and then local given. It was all very uneventful for the horse, if not a little gory for those viewing.
The biggest thing to worry about is afterwards when they come round. Need to keep an eye on stitches tearing open re infection and intestines falling into the scrotal sac, or worse. I knew of someone who lost their top Dressage horse after castration due to complications, but I believe this is rare in young horses the bigger and older they are the more risky it becomes.
So that would be my only concern, the discomfort will be nothing to the horse.

Our RID Stallion was castrated at 4 and he had the biggest pair the vet had seen in a long time. Poor boy was very sore and miserable for about 10 days after as it was a more extensive procedure. I think he had `bute during that time to help him.
He made a full recovery and is a happy gelding now.

I have had quite a few colts cut, they have all been done standing in the field and they are a bit sore for a few days, but once the sedation as worn off I have given them a nice sloppy feed and they seemed fine.
They can swell up a little and walk a bit funny but they have had no infections and within a week were back to normal, it is a sqeamish thing to watch and I always dread castration days.
I'm sure you and your boy will be fine.

I had to hold four colts being castrated standing up in their stables a week or so ago .. I found it quite interesting

None of them had stitches and were on a course of bute and norodine for a few days after. They tend to swell up but as long as they can walk around it goes down after a week or so I think

I've got to make the call to my vet tomorrow as my nearly 9 month old colt has just grown two.

I'm hoping the weather will hold so he can be done outside.

my lad was done on thursday,it was very interesting to watch and they were pretty big as well !!! he is still dripping a bit of blood and he is swollen but walking around quite happily and eating as norm but all is well, good luck for tomorrow and dont worry x
