First I want to start with a boring, please please please get your horses/ponies teeth checked regularly.
I've owned my boy for a year now and was told he was up to date with everything. I had an EDT out today who has told me he has diastema (gap between teeth) where food collects and cannot escapes so can lead to gum disease. Hugo was clearly in a lot of discomfort as he reared and threw himself against the back of the stable just while the edt was trying to rasp his bottom nr side teeth.
The edt believes he was sold on knowing he had these problems - i was naive in leaving it a year to get his teeth checked. I have been informed he hasn't got great teeth which clearly accounts for his sometimes really naughty behaviour and struggle to maintain contact on the bit.
Treatment is going to wait until the Spring as he is fed adlib haylege at this time of the year and is one of the worst things once he's had the gaps cleared - he needs to be sedated and all cleared out - then turned out on grass. I feel really awful knowing this now.
So lecture over.......hmmm, mulled wine and a mince pie anyone?? xx
