One thing to remember: for /you/ it is pretty hard to think back on all his past problems. /He/ is probably more focussed on the present. To decide if his time has come try to focus on his current condition (once you have more info from the vet) and how happy he is likely to be in the future.

Also: for a serious but uncertain diagnoses if you can afford a second opinion on what is wrong/if he is treatable/in pain then get one. Different situation but our dog was diagnosed with a malignant tumour after blood tests earlier this year. As he is elderly & has a heart murmur after further tests the vet and us decided not to operate. Only other intervention possible was PTS. He didn't appear to be in pain so we decided to let him stay a bit longer. Course of antibiotics for something else later and some salt water bathing cleared up the 'tumour'. Turned out to be a deep abscess. Our vets are usually great too!

Its a decision only you can make but I had a horse that was a Huntsman's horse all his life and so at the age of just 16 he had massive mileage on the clock. I had him in his last couple of years and retired him when he started to fall down unexplicably, it became dangerous and my children were very little. Just 6 months on he looked so miserable being retired, he was riddled with melanomas and I decided to have him pts. I am absolutely sure that he would have carried on living for 6 months, a year, maybe more but what was the point if he was so unhappy. Better an hour too early than a day too late is my motto and I am glad he went before he suffered.

Whatever you decide to do you will justify it to yourself. Best of luck x
