is proving to be frustrating.!
Some of you may be aware that nearly 2 years ago my beautiful mare had a kissing spine operation. She recoveed fully from this big op and was so much happier and a lovely horse to ride untill she then went lame. After many months of on off problems due to lameness she was finally diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in her coffin joint. She had the joint injection and after a few weeks I started to ride her again but it was obvious that she would never be upto much again.
As a bright and intelligent mare I was distraught at the thought of having her pts as unfortunately I do not have the land or finances to support a ' retired' horse, especially as she's only just turned 12. However, this is another story but I have been fortunate enough to secure her a place at the Buckinghamshire blood bank where she will go and spend the rest of her days once her blood tests come back clear.
So, in the meantime I have been looking for another horse and so far I have tried 5. The first was young and very green and extremely sensitive and very forward going, as in bolt in canter forward going! So a definite no!
The second horse was very thin and I couldn't get him going!
The third was an extremely well bred Hanovarian that was way way too fat and again, not at all forward thinking.
The forth was a trakehner gelding from a stud where I used to work and I liked him initially but the more I went and rode him, the more problems he threw at me. I took my instructor to give me her opinion and after a frank discussion about what I really want I decided he wasn't the horse for me now. ( and I have had my instructor for 10 years so we know each other well)
The most recent horse I tried was a big young TB that was at the yard of a professional show horse producer and competitor. The horse was 6 and what I failed to ask before I went was how long had it been in work. So when I arrived and he was pulled out of the stable, in the conversation that followed it transpired that he had only been backed for 2 months!! I did ride him and he would make somebody a lovely competiton horse, but again not the horse for me at my time of life.
So back to the drawing board! When I brought my mare she was the first and only one I looked at and I knew straight away she was for me but so far, I haven't found that ' special' something. I don't want a superstar and I dont want anythig too young or green, all I would really like is a gelding 16hh-16.3 upto a max age 13years. A sane and sensible type to do a bit of everything on for £3.5K! There will be a compromise to make but as yet I'm not too sure where that will be :-(
