My horse is very talented and can get my reins no matter where they are and chews on them. :o I am afraid one day while I'm riding they are going to break from all her chewing.

Is there anything like a rein guard or something that I could put on them so if she does happen to get them she won't go through them? I try as much as I can to keep them away from her but its almost impossible and when she gets them she really bites the leather.

Thanks for your help!

Okay. Will they give the same feel to her though?

It's not like I want her to chew on the reins but everytime I do a gate or anything she manages to get it in her mouth and chomp it. I take it out everytime but I can't micromanage every two seconds. I just don't want them to break one day when I'm riding.

I personally would be coating the end of the reins near her mouth with something totally disgusting. it is unacceptable in my mind to chew the reins, as you say, they will break, and reins are not cheap - well decent ones aren't. You need to stop this quickly. Something like nail bite may be the answer as it is foul, but should not harm the reins. If you have an old pair can you put something like cribbox on them so that she gets a mouthful of disgusting taste everytime she does it. if that doesn;t work then add a riding muzzle - the net buckets you can get for head shakers, she def won't be able to do it with that on

Sorry I don't understand why you let your horse do it ? is it when she is tacked up waiting to go on the ride, if so put the bridle on last after getting yourself ready and get on and go, not sure how else she would be getting hold of them, if you were riding they wouldn't be slack enough for her to reach, so sorry I don't understand how its happening, and that often, please explain :-)

Smear them with something horrid. Nettex do a gel which is disgusting - I know because I've accidentally tasted it! lol! it's called '7 day anti-crib' and comes in a small round tub. it's about £15 but cheaper than a decent set of reins...

Will be more like chomping on a lead rope for her, but won't be able to chomp through them like leather, and will be more durable

They are the height of fashion for polocrosse players
