my rising 2 pony is chewing everything!!!

Has anyone else had a pony that chews anything he can get a hold of?
He has chewed straight through several pieces of fencing, the corners of his shelter and the gate posts! Also if you have a headcollar/leadrope hanging off your arm that will get chewed too.
Is it because of his age, like teething or something?
Does anyone know what can be done to stop him chewing everything?

Trust me I feel your pain. My rising two is also doing the same. She ate 18 fence posts in 3 days. Shes also chewed her box, every single wall, the broom, the rubber mats, the water trough, her buckets and her haynets.

There is no way of stopping it. I have cribboxed everything but sometimes her need to chew overrides the nasty taste.

He will grow out of it!! Just reinforce that it's wrong whenever you catch him and wait for him to grow out of it I'm afraid xxxxx
 
oh dear, yours does sound bad! luckily mine only has access to fencing and his shelter so can't do too much damage to anything else!
i will have to go outt any buy more crib stuff and cover evrything in it!!

You think YOU have problems! I have 7 of the little bleeders chewing their way through EVERYTHING! I keep chucking old fence posts into their field in the hope they'll chew those - but no - they prefer the ones still standing (temporarily!) They start at the bottom and fell them very effectively! Creosote just adds salt & pepper to the snack!:rolleyes:

rflmao!!!! I love this!!!!! I also have a rising 2 year old, but wait for it (I know I'm cursing it!!) he's NOT chewing through everything BUT is trying to get me, at every opportunity he can!! He also seems tender along his jaw line so do think it's a teething thing, please hopefully (says on knees with hands clasped together skywards!!)!!!! He does try to eat the gate I have to say, but that's metal!!!! Just to be sure it's not a lack of vits though, make sure they have access to enough, my boy has a himalayan rock salt in his 'stone' stable (not chewable!!) and vits and mins in his feed.
 
Yep, mine is the same too! He's tried to eat a towel, whip, leadrope, my coat (Which I'd left hanging on the fence) he does especially like the fencing though.

I was assuming it's a baby thing and he'll grow out of it, just like little kids, they like to put everything in their mouths.

You might love it - it's costing me a fortune!:D

And yes - it's a teething thing! Your horse (is he a colt?) just finds you tastier than fence posts! Let him meet your elbow EVERY time he does it (the best place is the fleshy area just above the corners of his mouth.)

The problem with youngsters who nip when teething is that it becomes a learned behaviour - and they continue with it when they have no excuse! So nip it in the bud now and DON'T make allowances! Teething is a reason for nipping - it's NOT an acceptable excuse!
 
my horse is rising 7 and he chews everything! i went to a show last year, went to get my entry returned to the lorry and he'd chewed through my reins!!!!
 
Thank you janetgeorge, be sure, I do NOT let him get away with it, he gets a firm telling off everytime, and I use a pressure halter to assist, but he IS persistent!! I'll bear that corner of the mouth area in mind, thank you.
 
My 14 year old warmblood carried on past the teething stage-until the day he died. He gave up on wood fairly early on, but would contentedly slobber away until he had reduced anything fabric to a slimy green mush. I've lost count of the number of jacket sleeves, rugs and bandages he ate in his lifetime. He was fond of body parts as well - never used his teeth, but having your ears sucked by a horse is quite a disturbing experience!
 
my filly rising 2 also is chewing a bit just now too, glad she isnt the only 1 - i spray the chewed bits with anti chew seems to work but i forget its on the door lean on it then go and eat something and get the nasty taste!
she tried to chew on me this morning but we had words, funny she has been so cuddly since!
