just had an accident on my horse.....
just coming back from a really nice hack with the yard owner, with the yard in view. going round a tight bend with eye's view of our yard front gate, and my horse skidded on the road with all 4 feet falling under her, she lands on top of me, with my foot still in the stirrup stuck in-between the concrete road and all her body weight with the saddle on top of me, it happen SO FAST.... she then Scrabbles to her feet (as they do when they try to get up) just missing me with her hooves, thankfully my foot releases from the stirrup but as she try's to get to her feet she can't quite get her grip on the road and pushes down on me again, i start screaming in pain, as 600kg of horse is kind of heavy, when it's on top of you. so she manages to get up, I'm now in a daze as i banged my head on landing, thank god the yard was in sight... she goes slowly trotting home, the yard owner goes after her, as we are on a country road, but we do get some traffic, she starts shouting at me to "get up.... "get up.... as I'm lying on a blind bend on the side on the road. i can't get up to begin with as the pain was so great. anyhow after what seems minutes i manged to get to my feet and hobble to the yard crying out with pain as i couldn't feel my left side/leg. Horse is o.k but shaken up, Thankfully no bad cuts just a small graze on her inside knee, I'm o.k now!! but my head was throbbing from the in packed of the concrete road and my left leg is hurting so much and have some swelling around my knee joint.. If the pain continues I'll go up to A & E. She didn't spook, just skidded. But will be buying her some knee boots, for sure. I have been up and down the road so many times....

Pleased and you and your horse are okay, could have been really nasty

My god that is scarey! Was the road on a hill? It seems to strange to slip suddenly and loose all four hooves. Maybe consider road nails in the front for peace of mind.

I would go to A&E with your knee, just incase. It can take a while for the true nature of the injury to show, my friend fractured her knee. She managed to get up, back on contiue jumping, groom and drive home. It was about6 hours later that she passed out and had to be driven to A&E

Please go, it won't be overly busy and they take horse riding accident seriously.

Oh and knee boots never go a miss

Guess I'm o.k as i'm on the p.c!!! but then again can't move my leg that much

so it's better to sit down.. and for once i wore my B.P.... thank god.
she has road nails..... don't no what happend, not on a hill either. the roads/tarmac are so crap.
Will see how i go, i work in A&E some times when at the hospital, so know them well.

That must have been very frightenening for you and the yo as she was probably scared that you be run over.
Can you get some one [/list] to the chemist for you? You need to take some arnica straight away and for the next 5 days.
You can also rub arnica gel into where you took the brunt of the fall and mares weight.
Better to be blabk and blue than to bruise/inflamation inside.

You should go to A & E but i know how stubborn us horse people are so have a hot bath and be aware that you will be in a lot of pain tomorrow, looks like a day off work for you.

My mare came over on me and i got back on and rode home then got take to hospital with a torn Achilles tendon but for the next 3 days i couldn’t life my head off the pillar because my body was that stiff.

Christ, your YO needs lesson in first aid - she really should NOT have told you to get up after that!!!

I really would go get yourself checked out honey, NOT a nice incident to have had happen to you

My pony fell over on the road on me twice last winter, was really scary particularly as it was by a main road! Turns out there is a particular type of tarmac that is really slippy particularly when wet. He had road studs for the rest of the winter which seemed to sort things out. I understand how sore and scary it is tho particularly as I was hacking alone both times and was very fortunate to manage to keep hold of the reins when he jumped up so he couldn't run too far.

please go and get yourself checked out, it's really important. (i didn't when i injured my knee badly, i hobbled around heroically (in agony) for weeks and eventually discovered it needed operating on and wasn't going to mend itself). especially if you hit your head - get someone to drive you, and get checked over.

very shaken tho. but yep, buying a new hat. Y.O went to get the horse as we do get some traffic on the country road outside the yard, and as i was in the road on the bend, no car would have seen me lying there, so she also panicked for my safety.

You should consider a new body protector too after a hard fall like that. The impact foam in them can only take so much, and I have been advised that they should be replaced after a heavy fall or every 5 years, the same as hats.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Oh sorry to hear this. Hope you are both ok.
Just a thought... A couple of years ago the roads in Surrey were infamous for being resurfaced with slippey tarmac. I know some of them had to be redone due to complaints about horses falling suddenly. Some of these were in the Chobham area. It might be worth asking the Council if they have resurfaced it in the last 2 years also ask around if anyone else has had this problem. It was quite well publicised at the time.
Hope you feel much better soon.

This happened to me once, not injured, we were fine but it was on that horrible tarmac that gets smooth as glass after a while and the horses just cant get a grip. They kept coming and resurfacing it but in no time at all it is back to glass again. Horrible stuff, i'm sure the stuff they use is called something but I cant remember what.
I do hope you are ok and please get yourself checked out just to be on the safe side. When you are feeling up to it, contact the council and tell them that road needs resurfacing, they tried to help with that grotty lane I mentioned above.

Think the slippery stuff is called stone mastic ashphalt (SMA).
What a shock for you. Hope you are only bruised but as everyone else says, get to hospital to make sure!

Just had this e-mail from a friend, I guess i was lucky!!!
OMG! I do KNOW how you feel. I had pretty much the same thing happen to me.

About 6 years ago (it was the weekend of the Queen's 50th celebrations) I too was hacking out with my friend on a quiet, gentle, riding school owned cob. We'd done a lovely ride through Lyminge forest. We came out of the country lane and crossed onto Stone Street. It was just a few yards to a corner that took us back onto a country lane. We jogged across the (busy) road but in the transition from trot back to walk, horse slipped, tripped and went down on her knees. I instinctivly knew 'GET OFF', but I didn't have time, as she rolled onto my legs. Stupidly and more as a instinctive reaction, I tried to pull myself out. horse got up. I got up. My legs were fine, but my shoulder hurt like mad. My friend called out "Are you OK to ride?" to which I replied "No". She dismounted, trying to hold both horses, and trying to get a signal on her mobile. Fortunately a kindly horsey lady and her partner stopped. Her mobile did have a signal so she was able to ring for an emergency ambulance. The ambulance came and whisked me away to the Kent and Canterbury. The partner took my friend in his 4 x 4 back to the yard. The woman kindly mounted the sound pony and led the other one (with badly bleeding knees) to her yard just down the road. Frantic calls between my friend and hubby ensued. My parents collected my little girl and he high tailed up to the hospital.

I had to have an emergency 5 hour operation. I'd dislocated my shoulder and fractured my arm. I now have a pin in my right shoulder. Stupidly because I didn't lay still, I suppose. Probably wrenched my shoulder out of place trying to push myself out from under her. Unfortunately she was periodically lame after that and ended up being retired.
You must be badly shaken up. You're a medical person, so I don't need to tell you to get yourself checked out and take care because at some point shock will probably come out. I hope horse is OK, but it sounds like she is.

Please let me know how you get on.

GB - as everyone says, please go and get checked out at A&E just in case there's a hairline fracture or something. I guess your YO was terrified you would be killed coz cars wouldn't see you on the blind bend but I had an accident Saturday and while a riding friend was on the phone to Ambulance Control (999) they kept saying DON'T move her, DON'T let her stand up! Better if your YO had gone round the bend (as it were lol) and stopped the traffic there. Easy to say I know but just for the future.

So glad you and ned are ok hun xxx

Aw no, that's awful. It happened to me a few years ago so i know how horrible it is. Only my foot was smooshed up beyond repair, it's never going to be right now really. I wanted to get back on and ride home, thought it would ware off, but luckily for me the people i was with made someone come pick me up and take me a&e. Turns out half the bones in there were broken and they couldn't get my boot off by then. They had to try and wire it, but couldn't even fix it with that.

So go get checked now! Things might get worse if you leave them. Or it may be nothing, in which case the worst will be that you've wasted a couple of hours.

Glad ponio is ok, must be scary for them too.
