After GH's post the other day, I thought I might have a look through the photo albums whilst I was at home and find some more pictures of my special dog, Midge.
However I was confronted by my shameful doggy past... our first dog... A LAB

It's not too bad, he wasn't a proper Lab, he was suppoosed to be a Lab X Springer, but we find out a year later that the Farm Collie had got there first! Back in the day when crossbreeds cost £30 too!

But wait it gets worse

Because we also briefly had a GSD!!!

Rubbish picture, he was such a gorgeous dog. We went to the local dog shelter to donate some dog food and made the big mistake of going to look around the dogs. Rye was a 7 month old GSD and we instantly fell in love.
He stayed with us for two days, it was clear he hadn't the best start in life and my Parent's had no experiance of big dogs so didnt feel comfortable taking the risk. So unfortunately he went back

Big soft teddy of a dog shouldn't have had any problem finding a lovely experianced home.

It was sad when Rye went, however he made us realise we did want another dog, which led to this little bundle of trouble arriving....

My Parent's realised after Rye that they were Spaniel people (they'd had Springers before Mac and Mac was bought as a Springer cross in the theory that he would be slightly calmer than a Springer but still similar) and the quest began for a Puppy.
Midge was probably the runt of the litter, he hid under the chair when we arrived, which was a great start for a dog that was supposed to have a future as a Gundog!
However he did the opposite of most puppies and came out of his shell the second he got home! He spent the evening terrorising Mac, who adored him, and nipping us poor humans, hence he was christened Midge!
He grew into a fabulous dog, perhaps the most sweet natured animal I've ever met! He was a fabulous worker, but had a tendancy to chew birds, so was only sent for the ones that no one else could find

I used to drag him around the Young Handler Scurries and despite his tendancy to walk back, lift his leg and even once going for a poo

we won a couple!

However, this is what he did best of all.....

WALLOW!!

Blimey! I've rambled on!
grin.gif

He was MASSIVE! Mac was my Dad's dog and in the evenings would lie across my Dad's lap, Rye obviously thought this looked good, so would do the same, to me! Except I was about 8/9 and he was a wee bit bigger than Mac!
grin.gif

He was called Prince when we picked him up, but we thought it was a bit common for GSD
grin.gif
so changed it to Rye (which I think is actually spelt Rhi
blush.gif
) which is Gaelic for King.

He was fine with people, soft as butter and fine with our other dog in a normal situation. But his 'playing' would get way out of hand and he was at risk of seriously hurting Mac. So the decision was made. At least we were able to make sure the rescue had a bit more info on him.

Now you see if I were to post pictures of my past they would be in black and white (if not sepia
blush.gif
). You definitely get points towards admittance to the GSD mafia, even if you did only have him for a couple of days. He looks very mature for 7 months, shame it didn't work out but can understand he would flatten smaller dogs, and quite possibly having been in a rescue he had never learned how to play gently. Having said that neither has Evie
tongue.gif

We have a suspicion that he was owned by someone who couldn't cope with his size and strength, so had just left him in the back garden. He had no idea about being out and about, or other dogs.
Mac was a bit of a weak, sickly dog too, so it was just too big a risk.

Just as I was leaving my Mum found a load of pictures of our other Springers, so next time I will scan those in, not B&W, but some attrocious crimes against fashion and glasses in them

Mwahahahaha a lab! Ok, not a proper one but still lab in there at least!

Midge is such a lovely looking dog, very regal in his pose! I do love the wallowing picture though

About time you commented women

Mac was pretty much all Lab in everything he did, although he did have his colliewobbles occasionally
grin.gif

Midge was the bestest dog, I wish he was still around
frown.gif

He would swim like that, head under the water! If you threw a (spent!) Shotgun Cartridge in the water, so it floated and then sank, he would try diving for it
grin.gif
Bless him, such a dude!

Fantastic pictures! They were all lovely dogs, even Rye who had to go back. Mac looked utterly adorable.

Midge was a striking dog, look at his bone! I cannot believe the state of Midge wallowing in that mud. YAK! Smelly, wet, mucky spaniel. Nice!
tongue.gif

Yay for Labs! And smelly Spangles of course
wink.gif

I want a lab to go with Henry..... must be strong.... must resist.... cannot fit another dog into tiny house.....

He was beautiful, made even more beautiful by his amazing nature! He was very solid, took alot to stop him. Otto is actually very similar, except his legs aren't chopped off at the knee which means he goes a bit quicker!
grin.gif

He loved to wallow, he was constantly filthy!

Two don't take up much more room than one, and if it's a Lab all it would do is eat and sleep..
