I would like to tell you all what has happend to me in the last 3 years.
In 2007 we bought my first pony, a 14.2hh JC pony called Daisy (Snowbug). The aim with her was to get me out jumping bsja tracks and to be a really lovely, confidence giving pony.
That she was; she is the most fabulous pony ever, gorgeous nature and jumps anything. But in march 2008 she had an accident in the trailer at a show; she came out lame and had time off. I started riding her agian and all seemed fine, but one night whilst having a lesson i was told that she still didnt look quite right.
So the vet came out and scanned her leg.
And he told us that she had knackered her superflexor tendon.
So she was put on 3 months box rest.
After this i started riding her again and all was fine for a few weeks, until one day she came up lame again. The vet came out again and told us that her tendon has gone again and also her pedal bone was fractured.
He said that she could either go on 6 months complete box rest, not even out for little walks in the first month, or we would have to put her down
.
I wanted to give her one last chance, so she went on the box rest.
During this time we wanted to buy another pony, as i was getting no riding. We saw a few but then we went up to George Babes's and found a lovely 5yo grey mare (owned by lindsay babes) called twiggy. She was just a lovely little character and very scopey so we bought her.
She had a skin problem over the winter so i couldnt ride for much of it, but when she came back into work she strated to throw in the odd buck and change canter leads at the same time. This gradually got worse and worse until it came to a head a month ago when we had someone up to take a look at her. Saddle, back etc had been checked and nothing found. She went round bucking and bucking and eventually reared vertically and was this close to coming over on me.
we thought that there definately was something wrong so she went to edinburgh to have a lameness workup and scintigraphy. She had always been wide behind and eveyone had told me that she just moved funnily, but the report came back and said that she was 2/5 lame behind, and also slightly lame in front. They think she may have the beginings of a spavin in her hock.
Daisy is currently up for sale having come back fit and sound. I would love to keep her but as we are on livery it is just becoming too expensive to keep two. Hopefully she will go to a family home and be a schoolmistress, as i don't want to risk her tendon going again by jumping her.
I was told today that it is possible that we might get a loss of use claim on Twiggy (she is insured for £5000) as i bought her as a novice bsja pony and it is now unlikely that she is going to be able to bsja again. Do you think this is possible??
I know that i may sound like a person who only wants to jumpjumpjump and use my ponies as machines to be thrown out when they stop working, but trust me im not. I love both these ponies so much, they put a smile on my face every day. All i evenr wanted to do was to go out to shows and have fun on my pony at bsja level. I am now in my last year of juniors and have to date only been to 4 bsja shows. For my last year i am desperate to get out and jump, i really want a sound pony to enjoy. Do you think that my best chance of this is to sell both ponies and hopefuly raise enough to buy an experienced pony for my last year? or do you think i should stick with twigs and see what happens with regards to lameness and bucking?
Thanks for reading, i know its long, depressing and a big mess, so victoria sponge if you get this far xxxxxxxxxx
