I finally got my 'holiday' for this year, although I think I've come back feeling more sore & worn out (although also motivated...) than before I left!!
Me & my boyfriend set off to Pen Llyn Lusitano Stud on Friday, after sorting Dante out. Drove to Conwy and then went for a 4 mile ish walk up/around some huge 'hill'!! The view:

Legs already aching I then went to my first 1hr lesson.

Got to ride a lovely stallion called Rez, who was erm, rather lazy at first! He was quite big for me, more in bulk than height and I did find him hard work! When I finally did get him moving, we found that I could only really get him to passage everywhere :o
Biiig Rez:

Got him moving forward with a few medium trots, then started doing some shoulder-in, travers & half pass (trying to do without the passage!). When I was a bit more used to him we did lots of transitions from passage to working trot so that I could get more used to LOSING the passage, which did eventually happen :p

Then did some canter work, just working on basic single flying changes on the diagonal and then doing different turns back to the track.

Seems he wakes up quite a bit in canter and we did end up with some 'accidental' one tempis where I accidentally moved my legs one way and then just corrected him without thinking, rather fun! :D Did learn a good lesson though - do not climb hills before riding.
The lovely Rez:

Then, just because I'm mad... we walked to the beach. And back. By this point I was almost dead (I'm really not that fit!!).

On Saturday I started with another lesson on Rez, practicing more of the travers & half pass, as I find it quite hard to keep myself straight and then lose it quite easily and either go too much sideways or not at all :o Much less passage this time & I managed to get him going much more forwards. We even got some rather crazily huge feeling extended trots which felt wonderful  :D Then did some more canter work, this time we added in some counter canter, which turns out to be much harder when the horse knows how to do flying changes and does expect to be doing them... Was quite pleased though that I got the hang of controlling him and keeping the counter canter even on his 'worse' rein :)

Then sat around watching some of the horses being schooled for an hour before having my last lesson :(

This time I got to ride one of the horses I rode last time I visited, Litri. He's tiny, much more my size!! :D Although does have a tendancy to become over bent rather than collect. Half pass was MUCH better today and did lots of transitions between shoulder-in & travers too, which really helped me with the aids & using them much more lightly to cause less confusion. The best part of the lesson though was practicing some more transitions in & out of passage but without any help at all from Janine, just really feeling for the rhythm & timing the aids so that it was all less half hearted from Litri :p :D

Then set off home!! :)

Feel like I've really learned a lot from the lessons, being able to get comfortable with the aids for some of the more advanced lateral work on a schoolmaster has helped already - just practicing some shoulder-fore & shoulder-in with Dante this morning I felt that I was giving more precise aids & he was reacting much better. Practicing riding in & out of passage helped more than I had expected when I came to ride Dante also, just practicing some medium trot & canter & also just downwards transitions, I was using my legs much more specifically and also collecting him up better when necessary :)

I'm really looking forwards to this winter now. I'm going to take advantage of BDs current offer for associate members & register Dante, and hopefully find something to aim for with him over the winter! I think I will also look for somewhere more local to have schoolmaster lessons so that I can keep on top of my riding and not fall into any bad habits while trying to correct Dan as he's obviously weaker with many things at the moment. Also it would help me as I introduce more advanced movements to Dan I think :)
Not quite sure how I'm going to work this all around college however :( I'm researching sitting my exams as an external candidate (I only take 2 subjects anyway, everything else annoyed me!) so that my time is more flexible & I can fit more work in to keep up with the expenses!! Hopefully it will all work out somehow :D

Just to finish... some pics of me & Dan having fun last week!!

It's fab, you really should! If you need recommendations for B+Bs or anything let me know, we've stayed at two places there that were lovely, the Stud also does treks which look great too but I'm always just too drawn to the lessons!! :D

Looks like you had a fab time. I didnt realise they did lessons. They're only down the road from me I might book some lessons in. BTW the beach drawing is really good.

Sol that photo of you drawing on the beach is one of the most poetic images I have ever seen, I hope it's your desktop wallpaper AND facebook profile pic :D

haha, not yet!! I just want to go back and do a better one, but apparently I have to wait until it's warmer :( I think I was having too much fun to feel the cold... Thanks :)

What a fantastic experience! The grey you rode looks absolutely gorgeous and THEN you got back and rode bareback...you must be exhausted!!!!

Love the photo of you drawing on the beach!

haha, no, didn't ride bareback today - I think that WOULD have killed my legs! :p Just did about an hour of flexions, shoulder-in, few bits of medium trot, some canter transitions & counter canter with the crazy ginger pony then hacked out to cool him off! Maybe bareback would have been better... I then went on the cross trainer at home this afternoon for a bit :D Definitely motivated!! (My friends want to do a 2 day walk at some point next spring, figure I need to get fitter!)

great photos. I went to Pen Llyn a few years ago now for a lesson (it was very close to my grandma's house when she was still with us) and rode the lovely Litri. One of the most fantastic riding experiences I have ever had - I've had the pleasure of riding many dressage 'schoolmasters' but none that were quite so enthusiastic and sensitive in their work as he was.

Thank you :) hehe, lovely isn't he? Didn't get any pics of him this time (temperamental camera, videoed instead!) but some from last time...

The name is familiar! :) He's not one I've met/ridden though sadly :(
It really is great, I just wish they were a little closer to home!!
Thank you :D

I've been working 40 mins away from there for over 6 months and still haven't made it for a lesson!

Fab photos and report - given me a kick up the arse to stay up here for a weekend and get riding again. Haven't been on a horse for almost the whole 6 months so imagine I'll be rather useless... :o

yes the other horse i really liked was the wee grey gelding- the rest were all stallions... i cant remember his name now, he was quite small and he was really sensitive and forward.....
Caj gave me my first piaffe, which was amazing.....
wish it wasnt so far as well... plus all the roads down there look identical and i could find any road names on them!!!! lol

Get down there now! :D So lucky to be close, I've been unable to find anywhere doing schoolmaster dressage lessons closer than an hour and a half away, which is just too much really for a single 1hr lesson & numerous ones get pricey (and tiring in a day!!) :(

The ones I rode last time were Litri, Nahome & Noddy, all so lovely & well behaved! Uivador is also lovely to watch :D
Don't mention the roads!! I still have nightmares... :p

I really enjoyed reading this, sounds like you had amazing fun, great pics too :D

I ventured out to Portugal last month to train with Nuno Andrade, riding and working with the lusitano's. They are quite tricky to ride and do know how to take the mick lol. I rode a grand prix lusitano stallion who sounds exactly like the grey your riding. He always seemed to spring spanish walk on me :D which apparently he was doing on purpose haha, but I wasnt complaining ;)

Im of to Portugal again next week to Luis and Fillipa Valenca's yard. I am very excited :D

I just love lusitano's, they are just fantastic to ride and learn on, I felt I took so much away from my experience and feel that ive developed so much more as a rider/ horse- women. I would recommend anyone and everyone to do something similiar.

So glad you had fun, it really is a great experience isnt it :D

I have ridden there from 9 years old...to about 25, as had lots of holidays just in that part of the world

SUPER people

I hacked a lovely clydesdale luso cross once...that did a great spanish walk
