Well, you do a friend a favour and this is what you get... I borrowed a horse from a friend for another friend to try, he is a lovely schoolmaster type and we thought he would be perfect, so I brought him home, he travelled really badly ( but we knew this was a problem ) settled ok overnight in stables allthough weaved alot ( we also knew this - but as he is such a trusty ride we didn't mind about what he does in his own time ) Next morning we turned them all out, my 3 in their paddock, and borrowed horse in field next door, all post and rail fencing - reasonably new and very secure. Thought this would be the best thing to do as allthough mine are all fine, didn't want them fighting if put in together etc.... How wrong could I be... They had a bit of a squeal over the fence between them, but all seemed ok, and after 10 mins or so they all wandered off to eat, but can all see each other at all times, I kept checking them through the day and all still seemed fine, went down to muck out later, when I emptied wheelbarrows I could see all were still happy eating, then 5 mins later my friend went to catch the trial horse so we could ride him, she came running back into the yard screaming ' Boxer's cut his leg, theres blood everywhere ' I thought she had just seen a little cut and got a bit scared. So I hurried round to the field to get him in, as I walked round the corner all I could see was 2 bright red front legs on my grey cob... I am not kidding, he was totally red! I ran out there, passing the baby to friend, and it was horriffic, had to take off my top ( which gave all my neighbours a great sight haha ) and tie it round his leg to stop the bleeding, managed to get him to hobble into the stable where I could look at it better - vet was on way... He and trial horse had had a kick up over the fence, trial horse had kicked a rail off of the fence and the nail had sliced my mums horses leg in two. He has completely ripped in half the main vein in his leg, also another one, torn every muscle / ligament in the area and is basically a total mess. This was monday, he has to be cross tied in the stable for atleast 10 days to stop him rolling and ripping the veins back open along with stitches ' staples. He's doing well now and doesn't seem too depressed. Trial horse has needless to say, gone back to owner and the hunt continues. But I will never bring an un-known horse to my house again... And if I ever have to introduce horses again, I will make sure all fencing is electrified too ... Poorly boy : (

Here are pics...

Thank goodness your horse survived.

Accidents sometimes happen no matter how well prepared you are. x

Oh my that's horrible re the injuries, hope the horse recovers without any complications. Love your little boy Jack, he looks quite at home in the saddle already bless him!

Your baby is so cute.

Hope your horse doesnt have any lasting effects, good job you were on site and out working or something

Oh my goodness, what a terrible worry for you. What else did vet say about boxrest/treatment plan? For what it's worth, you can never predict these things, can you?
Your baby is beautifu, what's he calledl. Is that hubby in the pic?

Well, he has to staycross tied for 7 - 10 days, then another 2 weeks box rest I think... Then just small paddock etc. Not sure that he'll be ridden again, but we're really not fussed as long as he's ok...He's 23 so not needing work really.

Jack is my babys name, yes hubby holding him - not me in the riding pic...thats a friend.

xx

Bl00dy hell!! that sounds terrible. Fingers crossed for a very speedy recovery!

And Jack looks like he's loving it!

Oh my gosh! what an awful looking injury! I hope he makes a speedy recovery, you really cannot tell what horses are going to do when introduced can you?!! So unpredictable

What a gorgeous little boy you have! :) Talk about make someone broody! :o:D lol

unsure why trial horse went back, as natural thing to do-it is recommended you introduce with a gap in fencing between horses for this very reason, horses kick out when introduced, and given your lad was the one with a nail injury, it's likely I would say that he was the one kicked the fence post.
Hope he recovers well.

The horse actually went back as not only was it a nightmare to travel ( I mean doing cartwheels in the trailer ) drags you all over the place when being lead, he weaved more than we were led to believe, and he was not very nice to the others over the fence obviously, it was him that kicked the fence down as it was leaning in to my horses field, it was just generally NOT the horse it was made out to be! I put them in fields next to each other in the first place as if I had left a gap between them the trial horse would have hurt himself by trying to jump the bloody fence I imagine, he is a real worrier and spent alot of the day walking up and down the fence line! Just not to be....

I think had he had one or two of these vices it wouldn't have been a problem, but collectivley he was a pain in the arse, just a real worrier, I know it's not his fault, and I do feel sorry for him but he is just not the right one for my friend.

Hope your boy will be ok. We had a similar accident on our yard a ditzy tb gelding caught his foot in a stray strand of wire and pulled back, I don't think I've ever seen so much blood as it had cut the artery only me and the YO there, we just had to keep putting layers of towels bandages etc on it then the horse went into shock luckily the vet came very pronto followed by owner we had to wash the yard down and keep one of our liveries away who faints at the sight of blood, by the time the poor old lad was carted off to hospital I and Yo looked as if we had been in a war zone.

On a lighter note your wee Jack looks great.

I know of a youngster who had a similar injury (caused by barb wire :-$) She was only found by accident by a local farmer (the field was away from the livery yard who owned her).

Her injury was truly horrific. Same injury area as you boy. The wound was so large you could have easily fitted your fist in and more. It went from her chest, under her armpit and much further back, with numerous lacerations over all 4 legs. She also had drains in.

I didnt think she would make it it was that horrific.

Eventually her whole body swelled up and to touch she felt as though she had bubbles under her skin for around 2/3 weeks.

It took the genius of a vet 5 hours to stitch her up.

This was about a year ago now and she has been back out grazing with her pals for quite some time.

On the down side I heard that she still wasnt sound.

I dont want you to give up hope for your boy though and only mention unsoundness as you said you dont care whether he is rideable or not as long as he recovers. I just wanted you share with you and let you know that he is fixable.

Lots of vibes heading your way and Im sure he will be just fine x

Fair enough-I can't be arsed with stressy animals myself :D Much better to send homw and get a nice civilised beastie!
Hope the woudns heals quick enough, it's always the nice ones that get hurt!

So sorry to hear hun! All crossed that it heals quickly and well.

Wee lad is looking grand :D. Is all going well?

Thank you Mrs M... Boxer has been out on the garden this afternoon in hand and seeing as he dragged me up there I'd say he is feeling alot better, I was surprised that the vet gave him the all clear to walk around a little, but I guess if he moves a bit the swelling will be less and will drain more...

Jack is great, everything going great thank you, he is such a good baby and fits in with us so well ( sounds awful but you know what I mean ) we take him everywhere and he always behaves himself, he sleeps all night and is laughing all day, he makes me want to have more!haha But after our house is built... Can't hack living between my parents and OH's parents with 2 babies - it's hard enough with one!

Sounds awful Leisel... Poor pony, I think he will eventually be sound though, he seems so much better today and is just stiff and short rather than hopping lame this evening : )
