Anybody seen anything like this before?

Came in last night with it (not looking quite as bad as this) had vet out. Only other symptom is a slight bump on her head so he assumed last night she had maybe had a bump and it was the equivalent of a black eye. Didn't help as we had a power cut before he came so 3 people with torches poking her about wasnt the best!

Got vet out again today as it was alot worse, he has sedated her, local anaesthetic to the eye and had a poke about and cannot find any foreign body, the cornea and retina are fine so he is thinking a "Insult to the conjunctiva" (sounds like somebody calling you names!)

Oh, the luminous green is the dye he put in to look for scratches to the eye!

She has had an antibiotic jab as well and is on Bute.

If no improvement tomorrow then a referral for a knockout and operate and find out what is going on which I am hoping won't happen.

She has been such a poppet and very amicable considering how sore it must be.

Fingers crossed please.

The eye underneath is intact and no ulcers etc?? That's one hell of a conjunctivitis!! Poor baby! My daughter get's conjunctivitis like that!! incredibly painful. Perhaps she has caught it on something and ripped the conjunctiva? or is it unharmed other than swollen?? X

Nasty, never seen it as bad as that.... but what I have seen has cleared up in time with some AB's and pain killers.
I do hope it improves for both you and your horse. Healing vibes >>>>

O bless her little cottons. Nitty got a nasty case of conjunctivits one summer but nothing near as bad as that. Poor girly.

Fingers crossed that it looks much better in the morning and she doesn't have to go to the horsepital. Did the vet put AB drops in as well? I always thought drops were better for eyes than systemic but I'm probably wrong!

That looks quite nasty, but I think all eye injuries look bad... fingers crossed you get to the bottom of it without too much trouble! Hugs to the pony!

Ewwwww that looks sore. Hope it heals up ok. Poor horse. My boy had a mild case of conjuntivitis bit ut healed within a few days with treatment.
All the best.Hope all goes well.

wow that is impressive for all the wrong reasons!!!! glad to hear it seems to be improving though and fingers crossed it keeps going that way and no op is required:)

do love that green stuff they put in the eye though, did it come down her nose?? friends horse had a scratch on his eye so vet used that stuff and was messing about saying it was great for using in your own eyes before a night out clubbing:eek::eek::D

Think I spoke too soon. Vet been out to see her again and he put the eye drops in and now 2 hours later her top eyelid is going the same way. Grrrrrr. Taken her off them now. So back to fingers crossed again please everybody. One step forward and two backwards as usual!! :-(

My shetland mare had exactly the same condition 3 weeks ago. She spent a week at the vet centre but did not need surgery in the end -Phew.
I am also in Lincolnshire and the Vet had seen several cases like this recently.
I now smear Lincoln antibacterial cream around the eye each day and so far so good.

Yes the green stuff is great! Have a bit on the yard floor and it glows!!

That's really interesting that your Shetland had the same and also in Lincs. Very odd isn't it. We are South Lincs.

Thanks for all your kind words. You can't help but feel sorry for her as she has been so good with it all as well. Am having to disguise the bute and anti'b in sixteen plus mix and garlic which she thinks is great as she doesn't usually get mix only cubes!!
It is the most bizarre thing I have seen in years of owning horses?

This looks like acute swelling and inflammation of the conjunctiva and perhaps cornea. It may be triggered by both infection and allergy. The vet may well treat it without a specific diagnosis, using a combination of antibiotics and steroid drops. My experience is within humans and with aggressive treatment it usually settles within a week . Let us know how she gets on!

Update. It is finally in the mend. Is still very swollen but is going down slowly. Hope she gets back to normal soon and it doesn't happen again as still don't know the cause.
Thanks everybody :-)
