Hi,

Have been recommended an MB04 for my Anglo Arab who has a very fat tongue and dislikes most bits. Most suitable we have found so far is a sweet iron french link but I still find that she resists, shakes her head and it very unwilling to relax on the bit even after lots of forward work, transitions, long and low etc, etc.

It was suggested that as Arabs tend to have a low palet and the fact she has a very fat tongue that a Myler may help relieve some of the tongue pressure. Lady in the shop suggested an MB04 and has ordered me one in with full cheeks and hooks. I think this is about £70 so before I part with the money I dont really have, could anyone confirm that this would be suitable or let me know if you have any other recommendations?

Thanks - Dont know too much about bits. I usually use a snaffle or my KK but she objects to these.

My horse has a low palate and quite a big tounge, so also doesn't have much space in his mouth. I've found he gets on fine with a Myler low port comfort snaffle, but no better than in his RS Dynamic. A lot of places do bit hire on Mylers - it's worth doing this, as if your horse doesn't get on with the Myler you can send it back and get your money back.

I have a SF X ID sportshorse. she doesn't have a hugely fat tongue, but she does have a very shallow pallet. I did have her in a french link KK. It wasn't until I changed her over to the Myler comfort that I realised and also felt quite guilty about the fact that she had been having a very uncomfortable time in the KK.

The headshaking stopped straight away. The chomping, chewing and sticking out her tongue ceased later and the giraffe impresion has been replaced with a nice relaxed shape, she's more relaxed and she goes really well.

I know it sounds silly, but the best for me was when she bent her head down and snatched at some tall grass out on a slow hack. She had never done this before or even attempted. It was then that I knew she was truely comfy. Naughty girl!

MB04 is the low port comfort snaffle. MB02 is the comfort snaffle. As you will see from the pictures, the MB02 isn't ported.

ETA I swear by the MB04 for my hard to bridle horse who didn't accept any bit until I tried the MB04.

If it's just a case of a fat tongue then yes the myler may much better suited, if however she has low palate (which is common in Arabs) then they don't always tend to get on with myler due to the slight port but if you have it on trial at least you get to try it out first.

The MB04 is a level 2.

Horses either love them, hate them or are no different. You really have to try them to find out! I've owned 3 Horses - first loved them, second hated them and current one wasn't any different. He likes a mullen ported bit best!! Trial and error is the only way with bits!!

Agree with the above - horses either love or hate a Myler!

I have tried a million bits for my Arab mare, tried a few different Mylers as well as all manner of rubber and metal bits...finally settled on a French link snaffle. She just ran through everything else. Who knows why she hated/liked any of them; she is just a chestnut mare......... :p

There is a great Myler bit 'try before you buy' service:

www.scallywagsequinesupplies.co.uk

Jill Clements who runs the site is incredibly helpful and I would really recommend using them before you spend your money on a really expensive bit.
