I'm thinking of trying a comfort snaffle on my girly and just wondered what the experience is of people who have used these bits. She's a 5 year old KWPN and is just starting to get a bit too big for her boots out hacking. I currently have a single jointed fullcheek snaffle in her and she is just getting a tad strong. Because of the area we hack it is very important that I have brakes when I need them (can't circle to stop etc). If we're cantering/galloping it is taking longer and longer to pull up (she doesn't get faster, just doesn't slow down) and I need something she can't lean on quite so much.

Sorry for the ramble but I just wondered if anybody else had used the comfort snaffle on a horse like this and what their experiences were like.

I've used the Myler comfort snaffle with hooks on my old horse and he didn't get on with it at all. He didn't like the action on the bars of his mouth and it actually made his mouth quite sore.

I found a Cheltenham gag with a lozenge and 2 reins worked best for him.

I have to say that he was a sensitive soul and prone to rubs though!!

the myler comfort snaffle doesn't feel very different to the full-cheek jointed snaffle you already have... i've interchanged both and if anything the myler comfort is slightly softer because it has no nutcracker action.
the first thing i'd think of for a mare such as yours who is getting a bit strong and leaning is a Waterford - because of the multiple links the horse learns very quickly that s/he cannot lean on it. can't be used for schooling (not dr legal, can't get a proper accepting contact) but for teaching a horse to have more manners and not be rude/strong, i've found them brilliant. sometimes just hacking out in it a few times can be enough, you can then go back to the snaffle with the lesson learnt.

My mare can be strong but I had her in a Myler Comfort Snaffle (full cheek with hooks). She went well in it for a couple of years but I did have a few hairy moments out hacking and she did lean quite badly in the school. The problem I find with the Mylers is that the ball and socket type joints lock when they bend so far and the bit becomes like a straight bar.

Like kerilli says I'd recommend you try a Waterford as she won't be able to grab hold of it. I used to jump my mare and hacked her in one when she was quite fit a couple of years ago. She's now in a Neue Schule Verbindend for everything - never had a problem holding her in it (until we went to the beach at the weekend!).

Thanks for the replies guys. Lots to think about. I'm not fussed about it being dressage legal as we don't do dressage (jumping for us). I was also looking at the triple barrel myler as that seems to have the benefits of the waterford but without it being able to completely collapse.

Honestly, by the time I've figured what I want to try it'll be years down the line and she'll still be in the same bit!!

my boy totally lacks brakes, he has two mylers the correctional ported snaffle with hooks, this is fantastic and i can hold him in it and he doesnt fight it. He also has forward ported barrel snaffle which is ok if hes not being too strong. Mylers are the only bits ive used that my boy will tolerate or work well in. He is 14.2 steam train with fat tongue. Ive had no rubs and are well worth the money in my boys opinion!!!
The loose ring comfort snaffle, well, erm i might as well have been riding in a headcollar, he just pulled his head down and p****d off!
