Hi all,

After some advice! I have an older pony (welshie) who I am trying to reschool. Can be stubborn and stroppy. Yay!

Basically said pony really dislikes bending to the right and I have done the back, saddle, everything check it seems to just be set in habit. Dont get me wrong its 500 times better than where we started! We were bent to the outside to begin with we are now more or less straight! :D

I am riding in a sprenger loose ring snaffle at the moment I have been reading about myler bits and am tempted to try a hanging snaffle to encourage a little more flexion at the poll and a softness to the hand and clear defined bend aids.

So here in is my problem Level 1 bits say they are for young horses learning transitions walk to trot ect level two bits say they are established and give to the bit, well I am inbetween these obviously established can walk trot canter (all be it unbalanced but again improving) jump hack ect so definately established and past a level one but we dont have poll flexion or acceptance of the bit yet and we definately dont have outline or softness, so I am just at a loss whether to go for a level 1 or level 2 hanging snaffle.

Any opinions or expert advice appreciated.

If you go to the bit bank you could try a level 2 first and if it doesn't suit your horse you can swap it for the level 1. Infact they are worth a call to help you decide which one to try first. I found them really helpful.

I agree that hiring one is a good way to go. They are expensive if it turns out your horse doesn't get on with it and their sizing is generous - you might need a size down.

Yes, great advice to hire first.

I didn't realise the sizing was so generous when I ordered one, so ordered the usual size (you know, crazy like that :p) and it was massive. Couldn't return it so was out the money on that, and ordered a different size from somewhere else. Well my horse hated it and I hated the feel down the reins, so it was an expensive waste of time. So definitely agree with the recommendations to trial them first, wish I had.
