Myler correctional ported barrel bit??

I have just ordered this bit to try out from the bit bank but have a few unanswered questions. I’m hoping it will help my horse who just gets too strong when he’s excited - it’s mainly when out hacking and he knows we’re getting to one of our usual canter paths and he tanks off much too early! He throws his head forward and down and by the time I’ve gathered my reins it’s too late:rolleyes: Does it sound like it would benefit him?

Secondly, I’ve been researching the bit (with not many answers found) and I noticed that someone mentioned the bottom of the ported part can be sharp on their tongue?

And thirdly, do I have to use both hooks on the bit? If I just use one, will the bit not have it’s full effect?

I would keep the bit you currently use and teach him that there are no 'canter paths', just paths where you *sometimes* canter. Start by insisting that he walks everywhere. There is nothing worse imo than a horse that dictates the pace - and it is usually the rider's fault for allowing it to happen.

I’ll admit it is partly my fault as I just don’t have the strength to hold him sometimes! I think he also gets the excitement from the other horses we hack out with as they know where we usually canter too and also need holding back - but I’m assuming that’s just a case of needing to ride with calmer horses?

This is a training issue, you, and the other riders, have trained the horses to become excited at the same places by always cantering there, whatever you put in his mouth will make little difference if you continue doing the same, it may give you a bit more control but will not fix the issue, he needs to walk the routes and learn he is not in charge, going out with others who allow their horses to canter in the same places will not be helping.
 
A ported bit can do real damage to the roof of the horses mouth. I wouldn't use one if you don't have experience with them.

If you want to use a stronger bit, I would look up the bit bank website. There are different types of bits that work for different things. For example, there are ones that prevent the horse from lowering it's head when it tanks off.
 
Correction ports are extremely severe. the tongue gets sucked back into the port, the whole bit sinks down and then rests solely on the bars.

These bits enforce compliance through extreme pain. They are not a training aid; they are brute force.
