im considering a myler comfort snaffle with a low port for my beast, who is an arse in your average snaffle (gets tense wont work properly), just wondering if they really can make it difference.
(btw, back teeth etc all good, just had her MOT)

In my opinion;

Neue Schule - would never buy (will pm details if required)
Myler - Never used, but would try if I thought bit was suitable
Sprenger - absolutely love, and worth every penny! Can pick up very reasonably on ebay etc. I was lucky that I had a friend working for them and got all of my bits at trade price, but I would pay the full price if I had to as they are definately worth it.

Adore Sprenger, Myler are great as well. Haven't used a Neule Schule so can't comment on them.

Well worth the money, ones i've tried

IMHO the newer Neue schule bits are next to identical to the sprengers and alot cheaper. I do and have brought the Neue schule and myler bits. Wouldnt bother with a myler again, but they do work with alot of horses. Mine goes well in his Neue schule univrsal and snaffle. I spend a fortune on bits though!

My horse goes beautifully in his myler comfort snaffle.

It also worked well for the speedy sj pony I used to loan.

Would definately recommend it

Neue Schule fantastic IMO. My horse much much happier in their training snaffle than any other bit I've found. Have now got the Neslon gag and he seems happy in that too. I just won't use ordinary bits again. The Sprengers look lovely but the NS seem like a cheaper and every-bit-as-good (no pun intended!) alternative.

A few years ago I won an online competition an recived the myler book "A whole bit better" and its so interesting. It really shows you how much thought has gone into them and does highlight what a shame it is you can't get all of them over here. Apparently you can order any combination of mouthpiece and cheek compleatly tailored to you horse. I have seen them work the proverbail miracles but some horses have freaked at the independant side movement after traditional bits for so long but they soon settle generally, i'm talking minutes in most cases

ditto zoeshiloh on the neue schule - mostly because of "professional differences" with the woman and her bl**dy minded attitude.

my horse hates your average snaffle - and backs off the bit, goes tense and won;t use his back.

i have him in a myler "04 comfort snaffle" which he loves, and makes a massive difference to the way he goes, and i use the dressage legal myler for dressage (where i'm under rules) and the difference is noticeable even though the port on the 04 is small. he obviously needs the tongue room.

i've never used a sprenger bit, the cost i find is offputting, but if i couldn;t find an answer with myler of 'conventional' bits then i would look at sprenger.

We had very difficult mare to bit. Tried all sorts, Myler was not suited to her at all.... have tried them on my other horses too with no great results.
Neue Schule ... problem solved!!! She went great in the universal.
Sprenger... too pricey for me... but have a friend who swears by them and doesn't ever use anything else.

I use a Myler low port comfort snaffle on my front-heavy mare and she goes well in it, although I'd like more brakes out hunting. Tried her in the NS Universal with lozenge which was meant to lift her, and at the same time stop her chucking her head up and plunging forward when she was misbehaving before a jump, but she hated it instantly and actually came back off the bit and tried to rear up very nastily. Spoke to NS and the lovely lady there was totally amazed at mare's reaction. I do however think the NS bit is a lovely bit, well made etc, just doesn't suit my mare, so could be looking for a new home...

My Neue Schule bit just broke in the mouth of my friend's horse, so I am not very impressed with them!

Got a Myler Combo and another 1 on trial (although I might end up sending it back without trying it).

More great adverts for the HHO bit bank!

It cannot be worse than a certain well known Bit Bank which forgot to send the bit, failed to respond to emails, or phone calls (they had an answer phone message which said that they don't take messages), and only sent the bit when threatened with progressing through the credit card company. They then sent the bit, but forgot to include the return paperwork, so we got an extra month's trial.

I have heard of Neue Schule bits breaking several times, from different people on various forums. I use Sprenger bits, but have also used NS and you can see a difference definately. Sprenger are just a better finish and the metal on them doesn't get marked quite as easily.

Myler....tricky one. Some Horses love them, others hate them, I would trial one before buying.

Mylers are made from stainless steel, which is hard and does not rust. The Neue Schule is made from sort sort of sweet iron, which is soft and rusts. They both have the same ball and socket joint, so not surprising that the joint opened up and failed on the NS.

I have always used Myler and wouldn't change, however, the bit about them not rusting - I have one that is about 4 months old and has gone rusty completely along the full length of both bars and when I got the label out that was tied on it is states in small print that they will rust and in now way effects the bit! it looks horrid for competitions and the company where I bought it from won't change it. I have another identical one for my other horse that is now 4yrs old and still looks new.

I don't think it's sweet iron. It isn't particularly soft (I accidentally drove over one and it was none the worse for wear

) and doesn't rust (or at least none of mine have rusted!). I have heard of them breaking though, which is worrying but as yet hasn't happened to me or to anyone I know. And my training snaffle that gets 6 days a week use for over a year still looks as good as new - apart from tarnishing of the mouthpiece and some teeth marks. The Sprengers do look shinier but as my horse goes so incredibly well in the NS bits, why fix what ain't broken?

One of my Mylers rusted completely as well - within about 3 weeks of using it. the other ones are perfectly normal.

My CBxTB loves the myler - and I have used it on him ever since I bought him at rising 5 on the recommendation of a friend and I wouldnt use anything else. Previous owners used a french link (upside down and 1/2 inch too small!) but they didnt know how to ride into a contact so he was fine. He is very light and soft in the mouth and I credit this to the myler as he loves playing with it so has a really relaxed jaw. He did lean a lot as he was so green and I liked the independent side action.

I tried all manner of mylers for my anglo (each one costing between £50 and £80 each) - he hated every single one. Previous owners rode him in a dutch gag (on the bottom ring) and I really thought I would have to resort to that but found a £6.99 Mark Todd single jointed snaffle which he loves.

So I think it really depends on the horse.

We use the low port comfort snaffles on ours, and they go really well in them.

Re the oxidising, if the appearance worries you, just use a clean and dry pan scourer and it will look clean and new in no time.
