Hi there,

I am backing my youngster this month, she has been bitted since she was a yearling and i have had real trouble finding a bit that she didn't manage to get her tongue over! We ended up with a straight bar rubber loose ring snaffle for all of our ground work which seemed to work most of the time! Only thing is i'm not keen to back her with this bit as i know it can feel a bit chunky in their mouths? I want to start her in the softest bit i possibly can but don't want her to get into the habit of getting her tongue over. Has anyone tried the Myler ported snaffle thought it might be worth a try??

Mylers are 10mm in diametre, so they are slim bits, not chunky at all. The MB04, low port comfort snaffle is a nice basic mouth piece, few horses will object to it (obviously some will). It comes with just about every cheek style too, either a plain eggbutt or a full cheek would be nice for your training?

My boy seems to have learnt a new trick of getting his tongue over the bit. Apparently as they get older their tongues can thicken and it's not just him being naugty. So all the bits he was happy with before he became unhappy with. A friend lent me a myler ported bit as you describe and it's great! Look at the website and it shows you how and why it works and for a youngester I think there are certain ones to introduce them with and more suggestions than normal about settling them in, if that makes sense!

My girl was backed using the myler mbo4, she loves it and is starting to happily work on a contact. its very gentle in her mouth and the independent side movement helped a lot.

I would go with a dressage legal bit which rules out the mylers mentioned above straight away. My boy used to do this when he was first back, and putting him in a Neue Schule snaffle with a curved mouthpiece stopped it straight away. Try the starter bit or the team up.
