I'm getting a new bit for my 15.1 TB mare as she isn't going well in her loose ring snaffle.

I've done some research and myler or neue schule seem to be the best. What are your opinions?

I'm not sure whether to try another loose ring snaffle with a lozenge or french link, or go for an eggbutt possibly?

I'm getting her fit for BE at the moment. She isn't strong and never pulls or leans on the bit, however she doesn't seem happy in it and won't come into an outline. She has a small mouth so need a bit to accomodate that.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

My small mouthed WB seems very happy in his Myler linked snaffle with port. I also have a myler pelham to show him in.

The coloured filly has a neue schule loose ringed lozenge snaffle. All seem very happy in what they have.

I would try a myler first from a bit bank. Ring the lady who is linked to the myler website - think she is in Carlisle? She is very helpful and will advise you on size etc.

At the risk of being really annoying, it really depends which your horse prefers. Also depends on what it is about her current bit that she dislikes. One of ours happens to love a neue schule verbind loose ring snaffle, and the other is best in a myler MB32 with eggbutt cheeks. Both have really great info on the phone and a bit bank service so I would call both and see what they say and try a load.

Mine is really happy in a neue schule starter bit and is normally very difficult to get a bit that he is happy in.

Myler could be a good option first if your not sure as they have a bit bank and you could try first, or call the neue schule helpline and see if they can recommend one that you might be able to borrow from a friend first before you buy. :)

My Anglo has a small mouth and is quite uncomfortable in a normal snaffle. My EDT suggested a NS or Sprenger bradoon as it is obviously thinner and fits better in his mouth. A few people have meanly commented that "a thin bit is a cruel bit" but if your horse has a little mouth then an ill-fitting bit is a cruel bit!

He goes really well in both and I never ride him in anything else. Just a thought for you!

whatever you choose - you don't have to spend ££'s on them - do a quick internet search and you'll find a darm good copy of most of them - i've just found out the jeffries eldonian barrel eggbutt is almost exactly the same (and with added copper inlay!) as the myler mullen eggbutt with no hooks - and for a fraction of the price!

Have used both with success on different horses - it really is a question of trial and error.

Generally I find they accept the New Schule very well although I have one horse that is only settled in a Happy Mouth.

However it doesn't matter what you put into your horse's mouth if she isn't being ridden from the leg into a steady, consistent hand she won't take the contact forward and work in an outline.
