My 5 yr old had a very big leg on Sunday morning. Being over cautious with him i got the vet out straight away to see him. She said that she thought it probably a virus, gave him a shot of something and said to bandage at night when he is in, take it easy for a few days and go from there.
He doesn't have a temperature, and seems ok in himself (although at times seems quiet, but not sure if that is just me being paranoid!!).
His right hind was huge on Sun morning, and his left hind a little puffy around the fetlock joint, it didn't go down much in the field, but was down a little after bandaging Sun night. I took him for a hack Mon night, just a 20min wander and it helped to get it down a little more but it is still filled and undefined. Last night i lunged him with no restrictions, and he seemed quite full of himself and happy enough, leg was right down last night but again filled a bit this morning even with bandages.
Is this usual for a virus? Is there anyway to tell if a horse has a virus? Is there anything i can do other than rest him and keep an eye on him?
I have brought him some Propell to give him a little extra help but that is it really.
Is there anything else it could be?
