Hi all

Really hoping you can help shed some light on my situation. About 3 weeks ago my cob came in from field 6/10 lame in the right front leg in trot only. There was no heat or swelling and no pulse in his foot. The farrier removed his shoe and did hoof tests but he did not react to this and nothing was found. We put him on box rest for two days to see if an abscess would appear but this did not happen. We trotted him up again, he was still same level lame so we put him on restricted turn out as we thought it could be muscular and therefore some movement would be good to loosen things up. We did this for five days, trotted him and still lame.

Vet advised that we continue with the restricted turn out for a further two weeks as due to having no other symptoms, it is likely that an examination at this stage would be inconclusive. He is bearing his weight on the leg normally, can turn tight circles and is not expressing any signs of being in pain, other than when he is trotted up. Has anyone else experienced this kind of lameness? At walk, and watching him grazing in the field etc. you would not know he was lame, it is very weird.

Help!

Thanks in advance

Your vet doesn't think he can find the source of lameness in a horse which had been 6/10 lame for nearly a month? I'm sorry, but I think you need a new vet, foot and leg x rays and tendon scans as a starter. I've seen lameness similar to your description with a pedal bone fracture, a blind splint and with stress fracture of the cannon bone, none of which were obvious before investigations were done.,
