This could be a long one-Beauty orphan foal 15years ago got joint ill as was hit by the car that killed his mother( new forest), six or seven years ago became depressed had massive temp and was not eating also in huge pain, treated by vet but never knew what it was, five years ago same thing was whisked off to liphook where they opened him up and found thickened area in stomach but did not really give a diagnosis they thought colitis but he has never had any runs. last week saw him early am as usual his breathing was terrible and he was really hot but not sweating( beauty has never been able to sweat ) vet came out and could not find anything wrong as his breathing had got better, today he was depressed not eating ,hunched grumpy so in pain again, temp ..40.3 vet out again he has been given pain killers and steroids, temp now going down and has started eating again. i have always said if it happens again i will do the right thing and not put him through this merry go round, he suffers too much but you seem to get bowled along by vets wanting to try to get him right again.

horrible situation to be in - not knowing whether miracle cure may be worth hoping for or just to PTS. Thoughts are with you. Have been there with a mystery illness - when I hung on with the vet hoping we could solve the prob until B got so bad there was no more hope. In retrospect, like you, would have had the end sooner rather than later...so difficult though. Let us know what happens.

( beauty has never been able to sweat )

Does this illness flare up when its warm, hes hot etc, are you concerned by him not being able to sweat? it is a medical condition and is treatable, just wondered if you ever thought this might be a problem? have you had blood chemistrys done? any mention of ulcers or ulcer treatment? just throwing things at you here off the top of my head, the sweating, or lack there of,is odd though. Saw a few horses with this condition in the states (kentucky, very hot in summer) and it is very distressing for them)

Update on beauty...on wed he was no better in the evening so spoke to vet who agreed he may well be on the slippery slope illness wise again, so decided to bring beauty home to be pts, i didnt want him to go through what he has been through in the past, vet arrived got injection all ready, and beauty perked up slighty by being in a new place, so i could not do it, vet was fab and between me, vet and my OH we decided on a plan of action, if he gets colicky or sore on his feet, or his temp is not controllable we go back to plan A.he is on steroids hence if he gets foot sore, and at the min is doing very well, keeping everything crossed.
ps.. he sweated for the first time on thursday when his temp hit 40.5, so he can do it!!
