I brought India in from the field last night I noticed that there was a 2.5cm (ish) slice right on her coronet band horizontally and slap bang in the middleon her HIND foot! I am very puzzled as to how it would have got there. She does forge (over reach) slightly onto her front feet but surely this isnt the cause. She is not lame, nor is there any heat to speak of, it is just sore when I pick at it!! I cleaned it with Hibi and put some aniseptic on. The is no blood, no smell, no puss. Infact it is totally dry. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
Thanks

I put it down to one of two things:

One of the other horses catching her when they're playing about,

or,

her cutting it on something when she's on the ground rolling. Sharp stone?

I don't know how your horse did it but mine had the same injury on the side of her foot that I think she must have got from a knock showjumping.

I was advised by my EP that the main danger was infection, but the cut would grow down eventually. So as it was during the snow and the vet was prioritising the bad cases he was able to prescribe from a photo I emailed, and he gave a 2 week course of Norodine, and a tube of Dermagel to be applied daily.

So keep it clean and consider antibiotics as a prophylactic measure, and hopefully it should be OK in the long term.
