Hi All

Wonder if anyone can shed any light on this mystery
confused.gif
...on Sat am I found my gal absolutely covered all over her chin, rforehead, ump and back with large and small risen lumps, some of which were oozing a clear liquid. She seemed fine in herself.

I washed in hibiscrub and called vet out who confirmed 99% was an allergic reaction. She's had antibiotics, bute and a steroid injection and by Monday am was as right as rain. However, this morning was found again completely covered in lumps and bumps. She has been coming in from the field absolutely fine, but it seems develops these bumps overnight - she also seemed to be quite hot.

Based on that, the only thing I can think of is either she's allergic to the rug or is getting too hot at night (although she's fully clipped and has been wearing the rug for a fortnight and this has only happened twice) or, she's allergic to the sugarbeet she's just started on.

Hmm...any thoughts or previous experiences would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
Abs x

could well be the sugar beet, bes to try her without it and see if it rehappens.

Horses (same as humans) can suddenly become alergic to things that they were previously fine with. You now have the fun of trying to figure out what it is.

I have know one horse have the same reaction to sugar beet as this so it would definitly be my first try.

There are also at least two horse on this forum that are alergic to their sweat so the rug theory could be true to.

Also some are alergic to clipper oil, oh the list is endless.

Good luck.

Hi Abs

Have you recently clipped? Last year a friends cob broke out in lumpy hard spots which also oozed. he became quite itchy with them and after tow weeks of hibiscrub baths she called the vet out as they had spread quite alarmingly.
Vet had a look and said some sort of fungal infection which had got into the pores after he had been clipped.
Spots formed crusty scabs but were extremely difficult to pick off and took some months to clear up Im afraid.

My cob came up in three of these lumps (they are stabled next to each other) and I treated as for ringworm/fungal with an iodine based wash and had no spreading.

Thanks - yes, was clipped a week ago - it was our first theory (even though she's been clipped dozens of times before). I couldn't understand how she could have breakouts on her face too which was not clipped, but it's still in the running because the majority of lumps are where she has been clipped. what's also weird is that she's been as smooth as silk for 3 days, then suddenly again this morning they've all come up again! Will try iodine, thanks

Hi AliBabe

Looks like they are my top 3 culprits. Hoping it will be clipper blade oil or sugarbeat not sweat as she's a very sweaty betty! Thanks for the ideas

Just like what mine gets! I would suggest removing everything that has changed recently (i.e feed, elements of daily routine, supplements etc) & see what happens. I have had steroids for my horse to rid him of these, but they came up again straight away as he was still exposed to the allergen (whatever it may be). Let me know how you get on as my TB is having a particularly bad bout of this, & to my knowledge I have removed everything he is allergic to. Good Luck!

Thanks. We think we've narrowed it down to 3 possibilities: clipper oil, sugarbeat and rug/too hot at night.

Tonight we're removing the rug..then we'll try sugarbeat. It's too bad with the clipper oil, but I will wash her down after each clip to avoid too much staying on her skin.

Will let you know how I go.

thanks

Abs, we clipped the cob that went spotty last year yesterday and used a clipper oil made up entirely of plant oils as opposed to the mineral types that you normally get. I think it was a Barrier (will check for you) one, about £6 a bottle.

Smells nice too and, thank goodness, no spots when I checked him this afternoon!
