Just wondering if anyone has any idea why our 3 horses keep ending up with cuts and grazes. We have one 7y/o 17hh TBx, one 19y/o 14.2hh Welsh D and one 4y/o 12.1 AES pony in a field together. They were all introduced to each other slowly and get on well in the field the 4y/o is a mare and the other two are geldings but they've never shown much interest in her. The 17hh doesn't overly like the 12.1hh but nothing major he just puts his ears back and asks her to move away. We've never seen any major fall outs with the horses. However they keep coming in with cuts, the 14.1 has 6 small cuts along the inside of his hind legs, gained over a few weeks, none were enough to make him lame and they've just been cleaned and monitored, the 17hh gained 4 cuts in two days, one below his eye which was fine and healed quickly, another on the inside of his pastern on his front hoof, again this healed quickly, then 2 behind his knee on his front leg which caused him to go lame for a week and created swelling down the leg, were cleaned and sudo creamed daily and he is now sound. But today the 12.1hh came in with a small 'V' shaped cut on her leg, again nothing that needs vetinary attention, just cleaning and watching. There field is electric fenced and we poo pick the field every day and have never come across anything dangerous in the field, it's away from any barbed wire fencing, it is secure and there is nothing but a tree in the field. Anyone have any ideas why our horses seem to be picking cuts up so regularly?
Sorry it's such a long post!

I found a couple of cuts on Short Stuff's legs the other day. She too is in an electric fenced paddock, with literally nothing she can rub on/fall over. I came to the conclusion she must have laid on a sharp stone. Have found that a few times. She's been known to kick herself when spooked too - not just overreaching, but caught herself higher up her front legs & caught her back legs together.
I would suggest another check of your field to make sure there's nothing they've found that you haven't, but I'm sure it's nothing to really worry about. They'll always get into scrapes, no matter how careful you are. Long Legs managed to take a lovely patch of hair off just above her eye the other day - just by rubbing on her stable door.

The cut above the eye will be from trauma, injury sustained from them playing with each other, or possibly rolling where there may be a stone, the cuts on the legs from running or one leg being raised in front to strike another, also rolling can cause cuts to the legs when getting up, have you checked for chips sharp edges on the hooves.
