boo got a visit to the vets tonight with Ruby noticed a little bit of swelling around one of her nipples Monday morning, thought perhaps maybe a reaction to a bite or something but couldn't find any marks anyway was bigger last night when i picked her up from my friends and this morning was evening more swelling. She doesn't seem bothered by it, you can squeeze it etc hopefully nothing serious it's the first problem she's had so trying to stay calm. any ideas what it could be?

Good news, she's having a phantom pregnancy and has got some mastitis so 1 week on antibiotics and fingers crossed all will be well!

Thats a relief, did the vet give you anything else for her phantom? if you are not going to breed it would be better to spay as they can keep having them and it protects against mammary tumours.

What D said - Having seen my father lose his bitch to a massive mammary tumor that ruptured, I would deffo consider speying. Also I understand if they have had one phantom, they are more likely to have another and at higher risk of a pyo.

As ps says, once they have had a phantom they are likely to have another, and this also increases the risk of pyo. Unless you are planning to breed from her I would seriously consider having her spayed once she has fully recovered from the phantom.

Thanks everyone the vet said the same about the phantom pregnancy's and I had decided to have her spayed as I've only had her back a few weeks it's on my list! She should be about right timing wise once this has all cleared up. Don't see the point to needlessly put her at risk as I know I'm not going to breed from her :)
