Im running out of last years fly spray and looking to get a new one. Just now I have equimins extra strength fly repellent mixed with Avon skin so soft. Seems to be fine for midges. I really like the look of the green NAF citronella spray and the tags. Have any of you had experience with it? Do you think it works? Interested in the tags too but at £10 for two, I don't want to get them if they're useless!

Its a toss up between that one or the barrier fly repellent which I've had before and liked.

I haven't tried the Naf one but I find Equimins Citronella Summer Spray works better than most fly repellents - I use it on me as well :)

Don't waste you money, I bought a couple as we were being plagued by horse flies, they seemed to do the trick for a few days (they smell quite strong at first) but within a week or so they had no effect at all.
I've taken them off now as they were useless.

When my TB got a swollen sheath from a fly bite and a horrible reaction all over with lumps my vet recommended plaiting a cattle ear tag (pemethrin) into their mane or attaching one to a rug if they wear one. Not tried it as our fly problem has subsided. I could only find them in boxes of 10 and not available as singles.

The tags had no effect that I could see - horse was still plagued with midgies, rubbed a bald patch on the side of his face and came up in big lumps from horse fly bites.

I started using this stuff... http://www.aromatiqueoils.com/100870/info.php?p=5&pid=2466841&ack=9

You mix it up, and start off by spraying as often as you can, so it sort of builds up on the coat (it gives the coat, mane and tail a nice shine too, but doesn't make them slippy). Then I have been spraying quick all over once a day (unless it rains when it gets slightly washed off and you build it up again).

It has definitely worked - we were in a big field full of horse flies today, and I watched them land on him and then just take off again (and this was nearly 24 hours since previous spraying). The rubbed bits have grown new hair too, and the horse smells delicious :D

I bought the tags and the pink naff spray for when my pony was gelded. I plaited a tag into his tail and gave him a twice daily spray and he never had a single fly near him. I live next to a Loch so the midgies here are bloomin aweful. I couldn't tell you which one worked the best of the two but some thing did. The tags claim they last for upto 6weeks. Mine still smelled faintly at 2.5weeks but as of week 3 was redundent. Not work £10 if you plan on using them long term. They did what I wanted them to do at the time so are ok for short term use.

I have the tags on the neck and tail of Seren's fly rug as she wont keep a bonnet on, and I use either the matching citronella spray or the NetTex advanced spray which smells lovely and seems to help with the nasty midges.
Having had to have the vet out as Seri was wheezing and throat, chest and midline swollen with pitted odema, I can safely say that theres pretty much nothing that keeps horseflys away!!

Thank you, some interesting points there. I was thinking more of the tags for riding, but of they don't last long I'm not sure if it's a waste of money.

I went into tack shop today and asked about the fly spray. Was a good friend working so she kind of steered me clear of the citronella(!) and directed me to fly guard by carr&day Martin. So far, there were a few flies while I was grooming, so gave a few skooshes

Oops! Phone posted too quickly!

Flies were coming towards him and then leaving so I think fly guard may be my favourite so far! It has a quieter 'spray' aswell which is good as my boy's not too keen on being sprayed.

On my yard they've been using the tags on the school horses with lots of success. I've found when I've put a tag on my boy very few flies go around his face. He always bites his chest if the flies get on his face and he hasn't been doing that so I think they are good.

I always use it as well as another fly spray though. I favour power phaser.

I've got the tags but haven't got round to using them. However, I use this spray :

Yesterday I went for a hack with my ma, I was using the blue bottle spray and she was using a home made spray (with citronella and various other things in), she was plagued with horse flies but I was fine, in fact a couple came over to my horse took one whiff and then went back to hers. It also seemed to last for the whole hack (about 1.5 hours) quite successfully.
