My horse seems to attract every biting thing and has big reactions to bites.

I had to take his sheet off yesterday because he was sweating profusely and it was even hotter in the stables so he stayed out in the shade. As predicted he's been eaten alive despite being washed and doused in everything possible.

I have the NAF D-itch spray but tbh haven't noticed any signs of it helping.

I was wondering if any HHOers used it, the lotion and/ or the supplement and had any success?

Or any other brand tbh

Thanks

i used to get good results from the ointment but they seem to have discontinued it :( it was the best thing for smearing in ears and under tummies etc for midges.

I'm using a mix of the skin salve and Biteback sweet relief which seem to keep the itches at bay but don't stop the horse flies.

I also used to use ointment and went looking for it earlier this year but couldn't find it in stock anywhere, hadn't realised it had been discountinued. I have had good results from nettex itch stop which now seems to be called summer salve for smearing his sheath and under his belly.

the nettex summer salve is more creamy than greasy now too!! that was my back up plan. It used to have the same consistency as the D Itch ointment. I think it's the best alternative though and have a pot ready for when the last of my D itch is used up.

I’m having brilliant results with Carr, Day and Martin Switch Pro. Think it is called Kill Itch in UK. I put some on a baby wipe and do ears, face, sheath, midline and dock. My sweet itch horse is so much more comfortable.

My fault for not being clear. He doesn't have sweet itch but everything seems to bite him and he comes up in huge lumps be it midgie or clear bites.

So far can't find any repellent, barrier or shampoo that helps. Trying to find something that'll soothe his bites and maybe heal them a bit faster.

He's a poor wee soul

I’m experimenting with Spot On for cattle and sheep. You just pour 10mls on their withers every four to six weeks. It might be working. I haven’t seen my two since morning feeds whereas they were spending hours in the stables to escape the horse flies and they‘re naked except for masks. The active ingredient is deltamethrin and it‘s supposed to be effective against nuisance and biting flies. Not licensed for horses and pigs but it costs millions to licence a product for each animal so that doesn’t signify to me.

Have you tried antihistamines? Mine has sweet itch but also drastically over reacts to fly bites. I've found that since he's been on antihistamines he doesn't react so badly.

Yeah tried it for a few years at vet doseage but didn't seem to make any difference

Urgh why do they have to change things, I'm at the bottom of an old pot and was hoping it was just a name change!

I find the Red Horse Ear Balm really good for keeping midges out of her ears.
