My horse has been back with me for about a month now and he is on a quiet yard with a couple of other horses after being on a very busy yard with hundreds of horses for the past 18 months! I knew that it would take him a while to settle in but he's driving me nuts, fence walking, tearing arond the field and generally being unruly, he was never like this before he went. He is very attached to an old mare in the paddock next to him and can't bear for her to be out of his sight even though he has two other ponies on the other side of his paddock! Anyway my question is, would feeding him something like the NAF Magic help him calm down and relax a bit? I'm dreading the winter when he will have to come in because he won't be next to the mare......

Is he in the paddock on his own? Maybe put him in the field with the older mare (as long as he is ok with mares of course) and see if he settles because he is actually with her? When I used NAF magic on my mare it was to get rid of her edge when riding her and to calm her spooking and it did just that. I don't know if it is strong enough to calm fence walking and nervousness but I could be wrong. Some suppliments work more for some horses then they do for others.

I don't know if putting them togther would improve him or make him even more clingy. Anyways, I don't think that the owner of the mare would let me put them together, he can be a bit funny, if you know what I mean........!!

Is there nothing you can put your boy in with? My mare used to get quite angsty when she was left alone in the field mainly because she was the only one in her paddock. I moved yards, she established a pair bond with another mare and yes they are clingy but as long as they can be seperated when I want to ride its not an issue. My mare is now fine on her own with or without a horse beside her in the next field.

One of the ponies is going next month so, in theory and if I can persuade the owners, my boy and the pony can graze together. I just hope that this will be enough to calm him down a bit, it breaks my heart to see him so distressed when he is normally so laid back!

MAGIC is very good, but you need to establish whether it is just the mare or something else. A good start is too do a soil test as some grazing is lacking in magnesium which can cause horses to be more anxious than a horse somewhere else in the country. Speak to NAF and they will help you with the dosage to keep his stress levels down. If this does not work try Nupafeed, a lot more expensive but effective.

Personally I didn't find it much good, it hardly took the edge off my lad & getting him to eat it was a nightmare. I found Feel Good 30 Science Formula Calmer much more effective. Even better was changing his diet to no cereals & giving him plenty of work & a strong routine. I still go back to FG30 if something is likely to cause him problems though.
