Well, my 5yr old Welsh D had her first scoop of Magic calmer last nigh, hope to take the edge off her spooky ways in the school....

Anyone know how many days/weeks it takes to kick in?

Mine was on it a year. Previously extremely spooky ... now, still extremely spooky .... but saving muyself £25 a month!!

my horse was on Magic Calmer with no help to calming him down either! It is based on magnesium which is the ingredient that helps with a horses nerves but if your horse doesn't actually lack magnesium then it doesn't help them and so is a waste of money. You can have blood tests to see if he is Magnesium deficient and if so CalMag is a better strength for horses than some of the calmers that are supposed to help as they have actually very little magnesium in! be careful though, as you can overdose with magnesium which can be fatal, ask your Vet for the correct dose. Limestone flour should be fed along side magnesium.

echo dressage babe re magnesium, i have tried the lot - american equine does the job, doesnt make her less spooky or a qiueter ride but takes the very edge off her so she settles easier

Magnesium Sulphate is the same as Epsom Salts, used by Victorian Docs to calm people of a nervous disposition. Surely a far far cheaper calmer than those on the horsey market!

i found it helped my cob. He seemed alot more chilled out and calmer.
I stopped using it as it was rather expensive,£27 a month.
I am now feeing him Herbal Quiet Mix which is also chilling him out.
Give it a few days to start to work

i've been told that this would really help my mare or also nupafeed?

Which is better?

She's a good girl but everything's new and she'll buck at the JCBs and quadbikes if i pretend they're not there and try and ride through her tenseness rather than stopping and waiting for them to pass...

I noticed a difference in about 3 days

Took him off it after a few weeks as i couldn't get the dose right- he was one way or the other- too laid back or still fizzy. Put him on top spec calmer and that was good

Not been on anything for about 10 months now

Tried NAF on daughter's whizzy pony and after two tubs he was still mental. Tried Nupafeed and after 5 days loading dose he was still fast but controllable and jumped 9 clear rounds on the trot (not all the same day!

I tried Naf Magic and I wasn't convinced so stopped it and tried a mug full of black sunflower seeds a day. He's been a complete dope since I've started that.

My friend's horse was on Magic all summer and it didn't make any difference. She can get very fizzy and stressy and it didn't help at all. Echo the magnesium thing - it just supplements missing magnesium so if they're not lacking, then it makes no difference.

Yep..as mentioned above...only worth giving magnesium as a calmer if your horse is tested as deficient. The body just gets rid of excess magnesium through urine...so can be waste of money.
Just started my mare on Global Herbal SuperCalm...we are going through the 'alert' stage at the moment...which is supposed to be for a few days as it is also like a tonic...and then show some calmer behaviour....I so hope so..she doesnt need to be more alert!!!!
