Has anyone used NAF Slim? I was perusing the tack shop this week, thinking that the only thing I really need is a magic weight loss tool for the pony, turned round and saw this:

http://www.naf-equine.eu/uk/products/productDetail.jsp?detail_id=slim

I get the jist that exercise and reduced calorie intake cause weightloss, but this provides extra nutrients to make up for those possibly missing but does it boost metabolism? Has anyone actually tried it?

My mare had a lot of time off last year as I was pregnant, she gained a fair amount of weight but mostly on her barrell, neck isn't cresty and bottom isn't that heart shaped but she has odd fat pockets on her barrell.

I'm debating trying this??? She is currently in an almost bare field, one small haynet over night and exercised for 20 mins (at least) 5 days a week and hacked out for 1-2 hours on one day (I have a 5 month old baby so more riding is tricky and she has lost a fair amount of weight since the start of the year).

I'm hugely skeptical that feeding could help promote further weightloss but to be honest I'm willing to try anything!

just bringing this thread back to life to see if anyone else has tried and what their results were. I saw feedback on the NAF FB page yesterday with over 60 positive comments - cant all be trolls ?

thanks

I have to admit, I gave in and bought some!

I did see an improvement in weight, but I also wormed at the same time so not sure if that helped too. She's just run out but I'm not going to buy another packet until July when we move to DIY livery and I can really establish if it's the NAF Slim that helps. She has put on weight again since we've stopped but at the moment there are too many variables for a real trial.

I have to admit to being a total cynic in regards to these things but as the owners of fat ponies know we are willing to try anything.

Before we start again I'm going to look into the ingredients and see if I can get something similar cheaper and establish which ingredients if any are proven to work.

We used a similar product from Simple Systems, cant remember the exact name, think it was metaslim. It definitely helped our fatty pony.

Looking at the ingredients it contains mag ox and seaweed, both are supposed to help with metabolic function, and both can be purchased far more cheaply by buying separately. ;)

Which is what I was hoping would be my conclusion when I looked into it, I used to buy Mag-Ox for my TB but have no idea about sea weed. Are there any other useful supplements that would help?

Fenugreek and cinnamon are both supposed to help with insulin resistance, (which many overweight ponies are) but I think most of the trials have been done on humans so I don't know if there is any scientific evidence out there for horses. They wouldn't do any harm though.

Ive just bought a bag of Mag Ox and Bag of seaweed with rosehip. Will keep you posted on how it goes.
Hi, have you had any success with pony weight loss? I've got a 14.2 with a large crest neck and fat pockets.... only got her in April and she has lost weight since I had her but not enough. Thanks

First time I've seen this thread, just want to say I bought NAF Slim for my fatty NF because it had added Mg & a lower % protein that the Baileys lo cal I was feeding, it was also much less in quantity for the daily ration.
Pony refused to eat it, I changed over from the Baileys over a few days & the more Slim I added the less he ate, so added some crushed mints but to no avail. Pony still fat! Tub of Slim is now being fed slowly to other less fussy horse, and I shall & try the Mg Ox route.

Mine at the NAF slim fine (I mixed in with a few pony nuts) but is less enthusiastic about mag ox and sea weed which are added to Happy Hoof, she will eat it but only if I feed it to her by hand, thank god it's only a handful!

Ok, I've just found this on the laminitis trust website regarding supplements, looks like an exciting few hours analyzing labels for me then!
http://www.laminitis.org/feed supplements.html

Sorry to open up a old thread, but this article on the laminitis trust website is really interesting. I’ve got a lami prone Connie who’s never been your typical lami type. Never carried any real weight but last week did have a bit of a footy day so I kept her in for a week and it never came to anything. I’m putting it down to the random weather and the variation in the grass despite her being turned out on mud. The vet is coming to vaccinate her next week and plans to run bloods to see if there is a EMS/Cushing type issue going on.

Just wondered if anyone had any success with feeding magnesium as a help to the insulin issues?

I’ve had success with Magnesium improving insulin resistance in both myself and horse. However...........massive caveat, only when there is a significant increase in exercise. Now we all know that exercise is the major contributor to any improvement in metabolic rate, the magnesium I believe has improve it further but only by a very small margin.

In humans there are lots of things in play here. Drop in coritisol with regular exercise and magnesium which I think in my case helped with weight loss.

As for a product in a tin being able to slim your horse just by adding it to feed...................if it really could I would be sprinkling it on my cornflakes daily as well as chugging it down in any liquid I could!

Have a look at the label down the bottom in very small print, I think it shows the manufacturer as “I-saw-you-coming-supplements”.
