I'm on a mission to slim down the rather well covered Highland pony who just blew up on the grass in March - I asked in the farm shop and the member of staff who had tried it but had to stop because her horse lost too much weight on it.

She has been out in a muzzle for two weeks now but is still a hefty lady.
 
Totally recommend it, my big ISH horse put on a lot of weight last summer even with a grazing muzzle on and was going into winter too fat. Put him on Slimline for two months and kept his work up and he lost the weight but you must keep up the work as so far as I understand it works on keeping the horses matabolism working. I would start off on the minimum dose for one month and see how she goes and keep the muzzle on, they can eat grass and hay throught them if its the Greenguard one.
 
Interesting post am curious to what success people have had with this as I've been considering trying Fudge on his to help shift those few extra kg's that I'm trying to shift through exercising him more.

Muzzling has really helped Fudge in the past, but I'm trying to avoid muzzling this year as he hates it with a passion and was costing me a fortune in wrecked muzzles!
 
Have looked at the website and it says this product is designed to make up the shortfalls of a restricted diet, so does this mean it can be feed alongside a vitamin and mineral supplement?

Have had a reply from one of the NAF nutritionists:

Slimline would be fed as a replacement to your vitamin and mineral supplement or feed balancer. Slimline contains all of the vitamins and minerals that your horse requires on a restricted diet, along with a metabolism booster which will help your horse to loose weight, along with correct management and exercise regime.

The principle of Slimline is twofold. Firstly good do-er horses are, necessarily, kept on a fairly restricted diet and tend to not get much in the way of hard feed. While this can help with controlling calorie intake it does tend to leave the horse a little vitamin and mineral deficient. Therefore NAF Slimline provides a broad spectrum of natural vitamins and minerals to balance a restricted diet. This includes naturally sourced antioxidants, such as fruit and herbs, to contribute to his "five a day" and help to support health and vitality.

Secondly, and uniquely, NAF Slimline contains key nutrients and minerals to support a healthy metabolism and, hence, encourage healthy weight loss. This includes specific marine extracts, and herbs such as tumeric, both recognized in human weight loss research. Bio-available magnesium - increasingly found important in helping the IR (Insulin Resistant) horse to cope with glucose metabolism - is also included, in a form safe for daily use and at a level recognized for IR control. The good news is that Emerald is becoming a slimmer lady already, out with a muzzle by day and in at night with a Happy Hoof dinner and haylage net (I can't give her hay)
