Nail trimming - don’t rely on your vets to tell you that your dog’s nails are too long

Update 🙂.

Into a new routine as the scruffy long haired JRT is now having regular grooming appointments every few weeks with her wash, terrier trim and nail trimming all done by the lovely groomer.

The shorter coat has been brilliant with all the recent heatwave days, too. It’s also a heck of a lot neater than what I would achieve with the horse clippers 🤣.

Her nails are coming back nicely, and I can tell that she is more comfortable. We do a fair bit of routine road walking, but for some reason that hadn’t been keeping her nails in check.

The Beagles are a constant nightmare, but we can now easily clip them at home. (Thank you again HHO’er who gave me some fantastic nail clippers).
OH holds her up and they mutter love snorts at each other… she doesn’t even notice I’m clipping. And as it’s got easy I can do it really quickly now.
Tbh they still look longer than ideal but her quicks are going back slowly. As they are white/clear it’s much easier than black ones.

I'm really glad you're pleased with the groomer, your girl looks great . My lad has regular nail trims with her now and his nails are looking so much better. Although none of mine have ever been to a groomer I have seen dogs that A has done and she seems to be that rare thing round here, a groomer that actual trims according to the breed and doesn't just clip everything off.

Thank you, and thank you for recommending her to me 🙂.

Thank you for this thread. It really made me think. I know one of my dogs nails are too long. I’ve taken him to the vet and asked for help to trim him as I can’t do it. They had a go, struggled and told me he was fine. I knew really he wasn’t but my vet has said he is so…
After this I phoned and spoke to a really nice guy who runs a groomers and has assured me they can help. I have an appointment on Tuesday.
I’d have kept my head in the sand otherwise

I had one that was like this. I bought the grinder type nail trimmer. It took some positive reinforcement as the dog had decided that trimming of any type was out, but they soon realised that the grinder was noisy but not risky or painful. Bit by bit the quicks came back.

Funnily enough, once they were brought well back, the dog changed how he walked and started self trimming on the roads. I think once they are 'off' then they walk on the back of the foot and they get 'off-er' and are unable to self maintain.

Id told myself with lots of road walking he’d self trim, maybe he does a little bit they do touch the floor.
I constantly try to handle his paws, thinking he’d improve to a point I was able to cut them, especially as he hasn’t pulled one out in ages so I’d hoped the memory would have faded.
🤞 today they manage to get started with him, not all in one go I know, he said maybe a monthly trip for a while.

Well this is a big traumatic. I thought it would be like a vet visit and I’d just stay the head end and chat to him.
He’s been scooped up (not a happy dog) and carried off into a back room and I’ve bee told to come back in 15 minutes 😬
He will be besides himself! Why do people always think it’s fine to just pick up a little dog?!

Vet nurses will tell you they behave better without their owners present a lot of the time.

Yep this is what groomer does with ours . Not a murmur out of him !
