Well as many of you know Kia ia barefoot at the back and shod ont he fronts. Would be barefoot all round but bad farrier saga means that is now not possible. He is a Welsh D x TB

Eowyn came to me barefoot and has been for about two years or something I think she is a WB x TB

So here are some pics of his and Eowyns feet for critique.

Please let me know what you think especially hers as I think she is going to have a set of fronts put on as she only saw the farrier 5 weeks before these pix were taken!!

imo - heels look a little underrun - i def not foot guru - but have been both barefoot, shod and now in remedial shoes (well horse not me!!)
am sure farrier peeps be along soon to comment

I think they look very long and they both have underun heels. I would suggest have a chat with your farrier or getting another one if this is what the bad farrier has done?

can I ask what makes you think that they wont be able to go barefoot in front now?

He was soooo long in the toe he was practically running on his heels and this was shod and another farrier. He has been gradually built up but as soon as the shoes come off he is lame, not footy, as thats what i thought it was but lame with swollen tendons as his tendons were stretched and very inflamed and he was lame for a long time with the previous farrier. Vet diagnosed it and xrays etc were taken

the heels are not underrun.

The shod horse however, its shoes are too small!!!

The bare feet, they need tidying up but there is no growth there to come off so i am not sure where the idea that they are too long has come from.

they all seem like nice feet, decent quality with reasonable angles i wouldnt pick too many holes in this work. although it does look to me like they need doing soon (or now!)

the shod in front pics have been shod very short with no heel support? would like to see longer shoes with heel support and toes taken back a bit to take the breakover point back. the barefoot pics look ok but could still be shorter in the toe , again for the breakover point. all feet look quite good condition wise. barefoot depends on foot type and strength, good trimming and balance. and the type of surface working on, and the amount of work done! And the best person to advise you on this is a properly qualified farrier DWCF or better an AWCF

the other problem is your pictures although good quality are not the best, the foot should be taken level, level in the picture, level with the ground. when i am taking a picture of a foot i get my camera right down practically on the ground. All pictures should be take straight on too and some of yours are at angles!
The solar views are not level either you are not holding the foot level with the ground and have not aligned your camera so that it is level with the foot and the ground.

Not doing the above can create odd angles in feet that dont actually exist.

what am i? old cheese?

some days i wonder why i bother.

I would also question why you want to alter all the breakover points without any reason for doing so? Its not always in the best interests of the horse just to up and alter their angles or break over points. Especially with the bare feet as they will be growing in a way that is suited too and comfortable for the horse. i would not change this without cause. the ties on the shod horse have been taken back far enough!!! can you see the white line?

I have also already said the the shoes on the shod horse are too small. without the right size shoe you cant support the heels.

How can anyone think that first photo is a good foot?

It might, just might, be the best foot that horse can produce but it's far, far too deep and in particular stacked far too high at the heel. I'll bet those heels are well contracted. I can see some seriously underrun heels in other photos too.

Can I ask why you are asking?? Are you happy with them and looking for approval or unhappy and looking for suggestions as to how they can be made better? Because this really isn't the right place to ask for hoof critique, you need an expert on the ground. Photos can be very deceptive.

I agree that the heels look a little underrun, the heels aren't giving much support BUT maybe they're short so your horse doesn't pull them off in the field? There's nothing worse than giving the horse something to stand on and then 5 seconds later it does a handstand in the mud and pulls them all right off!

It might be just me but I wonder if your barefoot horse looks a little bruised?

if well shod to the requirements then they shouldnt pull them off wlly nilly n the field! unless deep bog! the farrier! yes i agree with you that the shoes are too small. and need more length and heel support! but the toes could be rolled and taken back. i support all you farriers! 110%. i divorced mine on the condition he still did my horses feet!!!!!

I dont have any pic of back then or i would post them!!!

I am asking for opinions for my own reasons, I like to do this periodically.;)

Farrier thanks very much for your opinions I will take the whole shoes thing bak to my farrier and question him as Kia used to have wedges to raise the heels and support the tendons.

These were removed a year ago and took a year to build the foot up enough to take a normal shoe. The shoes that are on are not his regular type these were a new type that we were trialing on him.

If they were mine I'd get a proper barefoot trimmer out immediately. The quality of the feet in the pictures looks very barefootable, but the trimming job is not one of the better ones.
