Can anyone tell me do I have to change my driving licence to my married name or can I keep it as it is?

I've had a look on the DVLA website and can't see anything about it. I'm due to take my B + E test in May and my instructor is querying my licence as it is still in my maiden name. Surely it doesn't matter as long as I book the test in the same name as is on my licence? I've kept other things like bank accounts in my maiden name and that is why I have not changed my driving licence so that I can use it as proof of ID for those.

Thanks in advance for your advice :)

Hmm ok thank you. How do I keep my bank accounts in my maiden name though without any proof of my maiden name? I know lots of people who don't take their married names, should they also be changing their licences?

If women don't take their married name & remain using their maiden name then there is no reason to change the name on their driving licence because nothing has changed. Similarly if this was the case a bank account would not need the name changing.

Is there any particular reason why you would want to keep bank accounts in a different name? Your OH would not have any access to them if he wasn't a signatory on the account anyway. If you don't want any details of the account coming to your house in case it is opened by OH by mistake then change the address on the account & have any letters etc sent to a different address.

When you get married you can either take your husbands name or keep your maiden name, but whichever you do, it has to be across the board. I didnt change my name when I got married hence I am now Mrs G instead of Miss G, so I didnt have to change my licence name.
If you want to take both names (double barrell) you have to pay £50 and do it by deed poll as your marriage certificate doesnt entitle you to do this.
The only time people tend to have two names is personally and professionally, when you have bult a reputation on your maiden name and therefore keep it professionally.

You are perfectly entitled to use your maiden name throughout your marriage. I know someone who has retained their maden name due to their husband having a rather unattractive surname ...which I won't make public ;)

If however you do use your married name in day to day life then all legal documents should reflect the same.
