I know that Trakehner foals are named using the first letter from their mother and that Hanoverian's from the first letter of their fathers but what about other breeds? I have a registered dutch warmblood mare who's name has no resemblence to that of her parents. Somebody told me that they are named randomly using a letter from the alphabet for a specific year. Is this correct? I am just intetested to know really. If I ever decided to breed from my mare it would be nice to know how to name the offspring! Thanks

Yes they use a letter of the alphabet acording to their year of birth. For instance, when the International Show Jumper Big Ben was born, the letter for that year was W. So he was actually named Winsten (aka Winsten Churchill) but whe Ian Miller bought him his name was changed to Big Ben.

There's no order to naming foals in Ireland with the IHB. You can call them what you like. With the WSI however, they use the alphabet. This year is B.
What I'm going to do with my foals is name them with the first letter of their sires name after my prefix. With one exception though. I really want a VDL Arkansas filly called Zodiark. I've no idea why though. I think its just a cool name and young stock that I buy, I'm going to name them after items/characters/places in Middle Earth/Lord Of The Rings

The stable names for my colts start with the same letter as their mum and the fillies are after dad as I keep fillies, as for comp names I try and name them in accordance with mums pedigree i.e. mare that foaled last year is called Lady Jayne so colts stable name is Lincoln (as born 4th july) and mums sire is State Diplomacy so called wee man Independent State.
We lost a mare who was carrying a colt in utero to an appaloosa stallion, she was called Catherines Cafe so if the foal was spotted we were going to call it Current Bun.

Tic Tac,

just as people on this, and other forums, have preferences for deciding upon names, and there are accepted letter codes, which are generally used, so I name horses after those people who have influenced my life for the better.

We currently have a beautiful '09 filly foal, called Molly Fulford. My aunty Molly had a profound effect upon my life, and for the better too, I hope! I suppose that when I was 18, then she must have been in her very late 30s. She smoked Turkish fags, and drank gin, loads of it. She also used to call me "Dear boy"!!

When she kissed me upon greeting, or leaving then the aroma of gin, fags and exotic perfume, was more than most young men could stand. I was smitten, and now that the wonderful, worldly and wealthy lady is now hacking out amongst the clouds, we have a foal, who lives on.

I dread to think what she would have to say about a foal being named after her! I hope and pray that, as she tolerated my youthful clumsiness, so she will tolerate me still.

I know of one well known rider who named the colt foals after hills, and the fillies after lochs.

It would be fun to hear if others have "Themes" which they employ, when it comes to the naming of youngsters.

Alec.

a friend did this, called a lovely filly Gimli, which i thought was a bit odd as he's an ugly bellicose dwarf...

I don't really have themes, it's just what occurs to me at the time. i have a few really good names stored up for the right foal to come along and claim them!
one of the best themes i knew of was champagne bottles - so they had a Magnum, Jeroboam (Jerry), Salmanazar (Sally), Balthazar, etc. very cool.
another was hats, because they had a few by Senang Hati. so: Bowler, Titfer, etc etc. very clever.

Legolas? Gimli? I wouldn't name horses after them. Too common you see. Although I do have a Frodo but that was from before I thought it better to have less obvious names. I'm talking Narsil, Anduril, Mirkwood, Numenor, Thrainduil, Gamling, Radagast etc. I would make exception for Aragorn, Boromir and Faramir. They might be obvious choices but boy golly are they epic characters!!!
Even my profile name comes from LOTR. In the book the Two Towers, Eothain is part of Eomer's company who initially doesn't trust the Fellowship, in the movies he's the kid who's mother puts on a horse with his sister while the Uruk-Hai burn their village.
Any where you see the letters Eo in a name it means horse. Eo is the old english word for horse. Thain is another spelling of the word Thane which also means Lord or Master. So Eothain means literally Horse Lord or Horse Master!
Sorry for going completely off track and also for being a nerd!

I am useless at names...

My daughter (then 13) came up with the name Echo for a Classic filly so she became My Classic Echo. Others have grown a name..Miss Independent because she would insist on laying down and staying out when we wanted to put her in the box with Mum. She didn't give 2 hoots from a few days old.

Another was bug ugly when he was born, all legs and giant ears with pink eyes, so he became Bugsy and had no proper name until I had no choice but to apply for his passport. He was all chestnut with no white and became 'Simply Red'- I hasten to add he became gorgeous at about 3 days old!!.

My farrier named my last one we call her Cassie and he suggested Casino Royale so that stuck too.

Think I will post on here this year and ask for help!

I name all my foals with the same initial letter as their dams if possible.

And I try and bring in some influence from the meaning of sire or dam's names

So my mare Cover Girl had a filly called Cosmopolitan
Caprice's filly was named Casiphia, as her sire sire was called Tycoon and Casiphia is the hebrew word for money

Dee Dee's foals all start with De, so we have had Devlin (born on St patricks day), Delphi, Defiant and Delta

Dingle Dell's foals all with Di, so we have had Dilemma, Diva and Dieppe

Persia's foal was Parthian (part of the persian empire)

Elf's mare line are all called Elfen...... so her foals have been Elfentime (the time bit made from letters in her sire Latimer's name) and Elfenczar (I needed something with a Z in it after his sire Herzensdieb)

We don't have a theme, but every one of my sisters foals has had an M name! Maverick and Milo!

Dorey's bub is known currently as "Nemo" due to the film link (even if Dorey and Nemo are different species...). I'd probably call it Nemo if it's a colt, but am stumped for a show name - and stumped for a filly name!
